Managed to get another €100 into daydream fund yesterday, happy about that as it is ages since I had anything to save.

About cars....we bought a new 1.2 car in Feb 02 and its still going fine, OH would like to buy a new car but I don't see the need....we do a few 500 mile round trips in the year and I no longer feel the need to do 80/90 mph...its against the law anyway, so see no reason to buy new. Would buy one of those bicycle things you still see in France that has a tiny motor which boosts the cycling....can't for the life of me remember the name but I reckon it would be fine for OH to use going for the paper in the morning....he would have to strap the dog on I suppose, he thinks I'm mad, but that was one of the reasons he married me 40 years ago so what he is complaining about now I don't know!

oo brilliant well done meanmarie on adding to your fund:beer:

well its a little bit cooler here ( not much) but at least there is a little breeze..

think i might pull up my turnips today, and get them ready for the freezer...its only me that likes turnips, but i do 'sneak' them into the winter caseroles;), need to do a lot of weeding today as i have totally nelgected the garden, but i have eggs starting to hatch from my new incubator... so i think i will get alod of distractions today...:rotfl:

might also get some more rhueburb in the freezer today as well, as i dont want to waste it, and its too hot to make crumble...

to try and spend less, and save more, i have been buying off this site

www.approvedfood.co.uk for me it is totally hit and miss, but still a very good site for stocking up, and using the sauces etc to batch cook and freeze..

I bought the 3.5kg scone mix for 99p bargin.... so this week i really do need to batch cook them and bung them in the freezer

    I love turnips.

Its baking here. we went over to new place and almost expired. Found a horse mushroom, somewhat unexpectedly. At this house everything is drying up and turning brown. :(

I've been bold - sort of. I currently have a '03 Fiesta - which is a grand little car and does fine for my running around (I have it for over 4 years). But I don't bring it on long trips really and tend not to go down "home" for the weekend on my own in it. DH was getting worried about it getting too old and starting to get no return and become unreliable (the engine light has a history of coming on for "no apparent reason"). So when he got his new job secured, he was looking for a replacement for my car (his car is an '06 volvo estate, and in great nick, so mine was the obvious candidate). I REFUSED to get a jeep of any sort, or take his as a replacement for mine if HE got a jeep/4WD (as we currently live in the city, and I also wasn't keen on getting an estate car to replace my little car really suited to the city).

So at the weekend, we went off to a dealers, I took a test drive, and became the owner this morning of an '07 Golf. Which I would be happy driving "down home" in, or other long journeys. Still suits town, and small enough for me. And as DH's family have a long history of golfs, we know they last for YEARS!! So I don't have to rush to change, and it would also be a great car if the daydream does become reality in 5 years or so - I know that it will easily put in 200k miles. (And I got a good deal for mine, and a great price for the golf compared to the VW garages - this was a Toyota!! :) So happy with that too!!!).

It will take a chunk from one savings pot, but it is a cash purchase, and I still have a chunk of savings. So happy with that (and only an extra €40 in insurance).

My completion date suddenly looms and the weather breaks....I had nightmares last night hat we had to feed the critters fresh fruit and vegetables from waitrose and we went bankrupt. :) obviously the hay cutting and depressing weather forecast is playing on my mind.

We're almost ready roll. A couple of quotes for the garden fence (we're going for cheap panelling, as its going to be replaced with a wall longer term, but has to be up rapidly to satisfy a vendor demand....one of those do it twice jobs). Next week I have o make some more fencing purchases for post and rail fencing, but it will have to be four rail, as its a perimeter boundary and has to be owned animal proof.....I have sheep netting too.

The chicken house here had a breakage and I've patched it up, but it makes the need to think about a replacement more pressing.

    Too old? !

Wow, our 53 car still seems quite new to me. :p

LIR's have you read John Seymours, the complete book of self sufficiency? I had it out last night, for the first time in years (steady :D) and thought of you (steady girl :D), it can be a little pie in the sky, but it has some great ideas which may be of help to you, especially the first chapter which deals with what to do with one and five acre holdings.

DH's care is over 20 and our only vehicle ATM.

Yes, have it but years ago. Its packed though! How sweet of you to think of me :) TBH I'm finding it hard to think beyond
    1. hay
    2.fencing
    3. moving
    4. getting some sewerage.

even where to park the chicken house (on wheels) is too much atm.....obviously its not vital, so it can stay where ever we unload it.

I'm sort of hoping the make shift facilities will cope for a couple of months I'm thinking of trying to set up an earth closet for the short term to minimise strain on the current (dying) system.

Also, I haven't got to long before I have to deal with the Suppers (we have two supper chicks already sparring, but too small to make a decent meal yet) and the excitement of finding plum to supplement the apples we'll be living off means more to process while getting things ready for winter. I see no hope in laying out productive beds atm.....I know it sounds stupid but although i have a spot to cultivate for food in mind I just can't work out how to most productively and still attractively lay it out, although my plan is to put the iron gut big horses there first too get the shoulder height grass gone: seeing it at ground level might provide the answers!

DH is getting...wait for it....two days off work (I think I'm mean to feel something more than underwhelmed at his employer)....to make a four day weekend, hopefully timing with bringing the hay in! I will have had the first removal van delivery by then, and spent three days trying to get that in place, organise the cut and the panel fencing.

I do have to think about animal transport in the next few weeks too. I'm going to wrack up some hellish bills going back and forward daily.

In a week I'll be sleeping there!:j (slightly put of by the dead birds that have started appearing in the house...through the open loft hatch probably:eek:)

Buy the humanure handbook, really full of useful info. I think it's on the web as well, but I like a book in front of me.

Are you going to run the chooks on the veg patch to be? And the horses. Will work a treat getting it ready for next year,
