Have a read of these, they explain that you can ignore your covenant.

Chucks are east to keep, ignore CTC's chicks, you can buy them as fully formed about to lay, adults.

    :eek::eek: huff ignore my chicks....indeed.....

Lotus-eater is totally right ( not about my chicks mind:D) you can buy chcikens at any age.. the best ones to get are point of lay, this means they are at their 'teenage' years...

to be honest... they are fairly easy to keep, as long as they have a lovely warm, dry and secure house, a secure run, feed and water, they will be fine... just make sure you put them in at night, and leave them out in the morning.... give their home a clean, and give them some nice clean bedding.... they will be fine...

we have had chickens on and off for quite a few years now, and for us we have taken another step in poultry keeping by buying eggs and incubating them, and our own eggs...and also now selling some youngsters...

backyard chickens have now taken over from the rabbit as an outdoor pet....

Lotus, that link you posted isn't working, but I think the thread you wanted is this one, which makes interesting reading:

I will try to post some piccies of our new chooks soon. I'm dog tired, having only come indoors at 10pm. Such a lovely day/evening, but we've been eaten alive by the insect life out there!

    Congratulations on your twins, rozee!

Yes......... let's go with that :p

When I first read that thread, I was interested too, I like telling people they can have chickens anyway, even if they thought they couldn't.

Yes, if they can have trampolines, it's open season on anything else!:rotfl:

Big thanks to Dave and Lotus-eater.

That thread has set my mind at rest. We live in a council house - albeit at the edge of a village with neighbours either side but fields behind us. We have been blessed with a large garden and the girls are at the very end furthest from the houses. Yes, our lease says "no livestock" but we decided to take the risk and got them in March. :D

So far, touch wood, there have been no complaints and I'm sure people further down the road know we have them as the field behind us is used for dog-walking. We don't have, or want, a rooster so we're not causing a noise nuisance. People here sometimes complain to the council about petty things but hopefully it may encourage others to get hens rather than stopping us.

We're still waiting to hear from the allotment committee regarding DH getting bees. They are a bit slow around here! :o

Well, as I hinted, we got our first livestock (if you don't count cats & ferrets!) last Sunday, but they weren't quite what we were expecting....

I'm not sure who got their wires crossed, but instead of chicks just off the heat, we ended up with 8 week old birds; 4 Vorwerks and a Welsummer. It was obvious that all five weren't going to fit in the big dog cage we had ready, so a re-think was called for, especially as the Welsummer was taking chunks out of the others.......

Sooo....we brought part of the barn into use, putting the Vorwerks in a stable about 12' x 12'. The Welsummer then went into the dog cage, placed in the stable too, so at least they could all see each other. Problem almost solved, but the barn isn't fox-proof, so at night we stick them all in the cage and wheelbarrow them up to the conservatory to roost!

I know, we should be using our fancy new chicken area, but the chicken house is still in transit, and secondly, the Vorwerks are small, relative to our local buzzards, which pitch on the power pole there. We'll give it another couple of weeks...;)

This isn't meant to put maggie off! As CTC says, you do need a secure house and run, and maybe something in place for if you have a difficult or sick hen. We think the Welsummer will be fine, eventually, but she's drawing blood ATM, so we need space + an anti-pecking spray to give all the best chance.

On the fruit front, DW has picked, processed and frozen 12lb of blackcurrants and we picked over a kilo of cherries from two little trees yesterday. The birds have their own bird cherry, which helps to keep them off ours. In the fruit garden they seem to go for the whitecurrants rather than the red or black, which again, is OK with us.
As for Avon products, we can't get them here. Back in the mists of time, DW was a rep for them, and there's clearly an opening for someone, but she's adamant it's not her!:p

Dave is the wellsummer older than the verwicks?

it might also be that the wellsummer was put in as an after thought, I would def keep an eye on the wellsummer, as she could turn out to be a bit of a monster....lol....maybe in the next day or so when the verwicks find their feet around the stable, and missy-summer is kept in the naughty cage.... then this might bring her down a peg or two.

there is allways going to be a Alpha female, but they dont look so nasty or dominant, when they have been brought up together...
