Yes but why does that mean the staff member has to stop everything he is doing? If there are 10 other people waiting in the queue is it really that fair?

Fair enough he wants to cash the coins and everything and coming back at a quieter time would be more appropriate and I am sympathetic towards the OP.

1 of my local branches closes at 3pm to count money up, its a small branch but I am sure something like then they would help.
As I stated before, get someone else to do it, kids would love to do it.

Yes, totally fair. I wouldn't mind waiting in this situation.

Not everyone has other people or family they can rely on, and one day we all may need help doing the basic things in life. The OP has just shown how things are changing for the worst in todays world.
These are my thoughts and no one else's, so like any public forum advice - check it out before entering into contracts or spending your hard earned cash!

I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!

Unfortunate;y my family all live away and are not coming to see me until Easter, hence it is down to me to count the money or so it seems.

Anyway, I am at a loose end today so will try the bank again to see what they will do. If necessary, I suppose I can pay in roughly the maximum amount of legal tender (ie 20p in 1p's, 20p in two p's £5.00 in 5p's at a time (and go round and round the queue and do the same thing again) until common sense prevails. They have to help me fill in the bank giro slips anyway (following a previous complaint - all I have to do is sign the form). With only one cashier on at a time, and the time it will take me to count 20p in coppers no doubt dropping them everywhere that should hold the job up nicely - might as well use the clipboard carrying staff to help me bag it up instead.

If they don't like it then I can see my slightly under £30k on deposit being moved elsewhere! I was advised by the bank to use the cash deposit machine to help me with lose cash, it is not my fault it is not working.

I'm afraid you've just lost all my sympathy. You've got £30,000 in savings and you're worried about counting up £70 in small change? You won't win any friends by that rigmarole you are planning in the bank either.

Oh, and one point, the concept of legal tender only applies to settlement of debts, so trying to hand in small amounts of copper in the expectation that they have to accept it won't work at all. They have no obligation to take it because you're not settling a debt.

While the bank should be understanding in the case of someone who is disabled, you also need to have some commonsense here yourself. Just wait until the coin machine is mended.

Sorry if I have upset you.

The 28k in the bank is a lump sum from the M.O.D. for losing one leg below the knee and the other foot in Iraq during the 'first' Gulf jaunt back in 1990 and has to last me for the rest of my life. I deliberately didn't mention that fact as it is of no real consequence in my view. neither is the fact I am wheelchair bound. I was diagnosed with Parkinson's at age 56 last year (just to compound things) and the money invested is set aside to help pay for my care in later life as no doubt the government will not want to know.

That is the reason I have to save the coins is I live on a small War Pension and even more meager Military Pension (About 9k PA in total if you must know). I get no other benefits as apparently I am too 'well off' and try to live independently whilst I still can. .

Perhaps if I was 'lucky' enough not to have need to count up the coins then it wouldn't matter that the coin machine didn't work..

    Peter.

You might want to look into that, your war pension should be disregarded for calculating benefit entitlements.

The British Legion checked my income out and apparently because I kept the lump sum to help towards my future care, I am deemed to be 'rich' and over the threshold for anything else. This despite my actual income being £6.00 per week below the Income Support Level (which would passport me to a whole host of benefits).

Apparently if I had 'peed' it up against a wall I would be better off now.

    What a system!

Actually (and irregardless of my "Thanks", which was done in error... slipped mouse) I wholly disagree. £70 in change doesn't take that long to count into bags, especially when most if not all cashiers have a quick and accurate coin/note scale. The OP has a valid reason for not doing it themselves, and it's not like it'd take much longer than the average massive business/church pay in.

The person in on a Saturday was most likely not a cashier, and probably cribbing from accepted policy on accepting coin. An actual cashier would probably be more understanding.

Why not give them a ring and explain the situation and agree a time to go in when it's quiet and they will be able to count the money for you without you holding up the queue?

Petrhaps you could ask for an appointment with one of the 'personal banker' (not sure exactly what HSBC call them) people who can help you count it into bags away from the counter.

Well just to put this little saga to bed. Late this afternoon I went into the HSBC, where todays 'guardian of the clipboard', a lady called Julia, could not have been more helpful (does she read these fora I ask myself?).

I wheeled into one of the cubby hole interview booths where Julia counted all the cash, bagged it up, filled in the paying in slip for me to sign, then went and sorted it with the cashier. Stamped paying in book was then returned to me. All done in about six or seven minutes.

Julia did explain that in future I am to either ask for her or her boss (Mal) who are only too happy to assist anyone with a disability or who cannot use the machines for one reason or another. Now, if only the man on Saturday could have done the same.

Anyway, thanks to Julia, faith is restored. I would like her to get some management recognition for her great customer service, so which would be most of benefit to her - writing to the Branch Manager or Head Office (providing my Dragon speaking software can actually spell her rather unusual surname!)?

    Thank you..
