People like your friend make me genuinely sick. All the females on my mum's side of the family have suffered from depression at some point. Myself included. But not once have any of us given up on work. My mum worked until retirement. My sister is still working. I lost my job but I'm returning to college in september. Not everyone with depression throws the towel in. The fact your friend is considering making a mockery of such an illness enrages me. Sit him down with a genuine depression sufferer. Let them tell him what it's life to wake up in the morning and just want to sleep through the rest of the day, what its like to go to bed at night not caring if you wake up. To cry yourself to sleep. Or to even contemplate, or god forbid attempt, suicide. Let him hear the effects anti-depressants have on your body. They sent me suicidal, made my self harm worse, made me lose my appetite to the extent that I went days without eating. And this was expected side effects from the medication. Tell your friend to grow up. Because if he fakes this, he'll be insulting the entire country.

I agree with most of this post, and am truly sorry you have had a hard time. But I "threw the towel in" as you so charmingly put it - thanks for making me feel sh*t about it. You should know better than to make such judgemental statements. Some people have such severe depression they have to be sectioned (not me, thank God)!

The stresses of the workplace contributed greatly to my mental health issues - I was employed in healthcare with a series of hopeless locum 'supervisors' and was worried about the results of potential errors. I didn't have the support of the senior manager as he didn't understand my role at all.

Ok, i'm sorry. That statement was tactless of me. I was, however, referring to op's friends attitude. I'm sorry i upset you.

Fatou256 - this is where you have to thank all the peolple who walk around with their heads in their hands being 'depressed' . They trivialise a serious condition, which, like so many illnesses varies from person to person.
What do you suggest then - or what sort of help would you find the most useful?
    One life.
