The malware may have been coincidental.

When you installed the new drive, did you make sure that it was on the same IDE ribbon cable as your other CD drive? In general, CD/DVD drives don't like sharing a cable with a hard disk.

If on the correct cable, are you certain that you set the M/S/CS jumpers correctly? Generally if you have two set as M or S they just won't work, but things get more unpredictable if you combine CS with either M or S. The correct setting should be one M and one S or both as CS - though I think that some chipsets may not support Cable Select...

It's on the same ribbon.

The original jumper is set to M and the new drive is set to CS (as recommended on the net); which conflicts with what you are saying.

I'll unplug and set the new one to S.... you little beauty!!

Guys - nightmare situations...

I swapped the jumpers around and am going from the machine now not recognising any drive as even being installed!!

So have reverted back to M & CS (new DVD). M still works OK but now CS is telling me:

"Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with Windows".

I've never felt frustration like this....

Please help.
