I would agree with Dave/LIR and Really on this.....I would be looking for a house that I would enjoy and like but also at the same time, be looking forward to a just in case scenario to future ease of selling.

I would have to love the house and the community though.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

It's a big decision, you sound like you have doubts, in that case the answer is straight forward, don't do it.

C'mon, all big decisions have pro's and con's:rolleyes:

I had doubts on buying houses, starting a business, buying business premises and having children, but each seemed to turn out for the best.

You don't turn away from forks in the road merely because there are some doubts and some lures.
  • I agree with Conrad, when you are making a decision as major as buying a house, unless you are in a position to buy outright you will always have some doubts and that doesn't mean you shouldn't go ahead.

Regarding the emotional thing, architecture is a big thing for me too which is why I always think it a little odd when people say houses should revert to rebuilding costs. Our house was built in 1901, if it burned down and had to be rebuilt it would not be the same house.

I am emotionally attached to our house in a way that I haven't been about previous houses I've lived in. It ticks almost all the boxes - architecture, size, community and close to good schools. Downsides are that it's quite close to a main road which is a bit tricky to cross with children as there isn't a crossing and no pavement on one side and the garden is a bit smaller than you'd expect for a large house. Unless you're very wealthy indeed you usually have to make one or two compromises especially if good state schools or public transport are at the top of your priority list.

haha, I'm looking at another one, that might make me an accidental LL....I'm prepared for the backlash. Its not BTL though, commercial. So its not putting someone out of a house. :) We'll see. I'll try to be less emotional this time, folks. :)

    Seconded.

I'm looking at two today as well. Didn't want to, but DW needs cheap day out! ;)

Both of these would give us a secondary income & one is currently equestrian, though I'm sure I could fit a new wood in somewhere!

Must go; nice 340 mile round trip awaits......

Is the equestrian one not at a bit of a premium? Have a good day. :)

Not sure what you mean, as 'equestrian' can be almost anything, including a 2 bed Woolaway with a small yard, but thanks; we had a super day.

The 'horsey house' was about a mile from the coast. A 3 bed cottage in fair nick, a second cottage, partially converted, tacked on, various tatty outbuildings and a fabulous 35' stable designed for heavy horses & hay loft over. There was also a residential caravan + 5 acres. Definitely lots of possibilities, but a few snags too, of course, chief among which was the way the buildings & land related to each other......and you can't alter that! I think if we were purely after guaranteed income, it would be a very serious contender. Owners are motivated to move and have a failed business venture, I think, reading between the lines. (Why else would you have 30 saddles & other horse stuff in your loft? People surely don't buy those mail order?)

The second one was very pretty externally, but left a lot to be desired inside. It was sad; two oldies in their 80s, unable to go upstairs, though it had never been that special up there! They'd gone on the market last year at a daft price & just dropped £50k. I reckon they have another £50k to drop. This one came with a fabulous workshop and 2.5 acres, but some of the land I'd assumed was its garden, wasn't. 'Funny, we thought that too,' the old dear said, 'but it wasn't on the deeds.' Oh well!

I don't think anyone had cleaned that house upstairs for a year or two. They have at least 3 kids, all of whom stand to inherit about £100k in due course, which won't be long. Makes me wild! Anyway, I'm glad we're not negotiating on that one.

Secretly, I'm happy there were a few issues with House 1. I'm not ready to buy yet. Did a drive-by of one or two others and felt they were just ridiculously priced. Still when I baulked at a place the agent suggested today, saying it was at least £100k over budget, she didn't flinch, but just said 'I'll put the details in the post.' Now I can do business with someone like that, even if she does wear 3" heels to a rural viewing and say 'Absolutely!' to everything you say!
