  • :o Thanks for the welcome Plum Pie - I've read for ages and just come out of hiding, lol.
  • And, you know, they still put sultanas in curry (according to my OH, no he's not the world's oldest school kid, he's a teacher and yes, despite being married to a pretty darned hot cook - me- he has school dinners)(mind you I sometimes surprise him with a packed lunch and like to drop it off in the school office in a Postman Pat lunchbox).

Did anyone go to a Catholic Upper School and have to 50p (in 1989) for a cup of soup and a roll in aid of CAFOD? Now, I'm happy to do my bit, really I am, but it always seemed to be the day I was really really hungry and had missed my breakfast.....perhaps that was the point..
    Sorry, I'll go now...

I only ever once had a school dinner (used to be a sandwiches kid!!) and that was the cheese and onion or cheese and potatopie they used to do. I used to absolutely love the smell of it too !!!

Does anyone have the recipe for it, pretty please ?

    xx
I have searched high and low for the recipe for authentic school dinner cheese pie and have never found one that tastes like the one I had at my school in the 1970's. The one we had was made in a huge rectangular tin and had shortcrust pastry on the bottom and then a sort of quiche type cheese and onion topping, only it wasn't as "eggy" as quiche. I have tried all the recipes from this board and from links from here and they aren't the same. I used to love it. We also used to get this thing called Dutch Roll, which was like a kind of meatloaf which was lovely, and also chicken rissoles which I loved.

Did anyone post a recipe for Cornflake Tart - pastry base with a cornflake/syrup topping - Mmmmmm !!!

  • I work in a school and the cook still makes the cheese pie, although the one that she does is cheese and rice flan not with potatoes. Will have to see if she can give me the recipe. Have a reciepe for chocolate crunch if anybody wants it.

  • oohhh would love to try those recipes please In for a Bargain.

The sad thing today is that schools which are being rebuilt are only being equipped with cook/chill facilities as a rule, so the meals are likethose you get in hospitals and about as appetising. My daughter's school - 450 kids - has a tiny room where ready pre-pared meals are just reheated.

    It's heartbreaking.

I've made gypsy tart. You need a pastry shell, bought or made, and basically you whisk up brown sugar and evaporated milk till it's thick, pour it into the shell and bake slowly until it's set.
Manchester Tart is a pastry with a layer of red jam (any sort) a layer of thick custard, and coconut spread on top, and baked. We love it! :)

I was going to post that Manchester Tart was not my favourite! How did they think that up?

  • Will have to try and get the cheese and rice flan one but here goes for the chocolate crunch. It is actually a recipe from a school kitchen. Also it is quite old and still in ounces hope that is ok.
    Chocolate crunch Quantity 10
    8 oz margarine, 11oz flour, 8oz sugar, 1 1/2 oz cocoa, 1/2 tsp vanilla essence. Oven temp 325oF, 170oC or Gas No.3.
    1. Melt margarine in saucepan. Add vanilla essence. 2. Mix all dry ingredients in mixer bowl, add margaine. 3. Mix well. Divide between greased tins and spread evenly. 4. Make a pattern with a fork. Brush with water and spinkle with sugar. 5. Bake in a slow oven for about 40 minutes. 6. Portion whilst warm and cool on a wire tray.
    Happy Baking!!
