There is a lot of "Don't believe anything you read in the press - it's all part of a worldwide conspiracy aimed at duping us into submission." type stuff about these days. However, such people are usually only too willing to take on board unquestioningly everything they are fed about, for example. global warming. (For the record I am not a global warming denier (who these days fall somewhere between Dail Mail readers and child molesters), but I am a global warming agnostic.)

IMO the reason the Daily Mail is important a sorce of 'evidence' is that its readership obviously have sympathy with its reportage and this will be represented at the ballot box eventually one can presume.

How accurate the paper is is only part of the picture of its importance, IMO.

The Daily Mail is referred to as the Daily Nazi in my workplace. ;)

Also known as Daily Heil, Daily Hate and Daily Wail... all of which describe the paper perfect in my humble opinion :D

Credit where credit is due the Heil is capable of truly breathtaking hypocrisy... almost as much as perhaps some of the people quoting it who seem to have forgotten how just much that newspaper pushed the BTL market about 6 years ago.

Regardless of whether you like the Daily Mail or not, its circulation figures are pretty impressive with 4 times the amount of readers than both The Guardian and The Independent put together. If paper circulation figures represent voting trends, then obviously the Tories should be well out in front with the Daily Mail, The Telegraph and the centre-right Times all with much higher circulation figures that the left-leaning The Guardian and The Independent.

The Left likes to despise the Daily Mail and sneer (in some particularly unpleasant ways) at its readers but it has been the paper promoting the Binyan Mohammed story - much to the fury of many of those readers, judging by their online comments. It was also resolutely against the invasion of Iraq.

Still, it'd be a shame to let facts get in the way of a good right-on stereotype, wouldn't it?

The Mail is a trashy, celebrity-driven, sensationalist tabloid but, if anything, its political stance is less predictable than, say, The Guardian's.

That doesn't make it a good newspaper, but at least you get a choice whether to pay for it or not. Not a choice offered by the BBC or, in the sense that it is kept afloat by its lock on public sector recruitment advertising, The Guardian.

And no, I don't work for the Mail - neither do I buy it.
