it's available credit, because at the moment, you could get yourself into 11.5K of debt at the drop of a hat, which could be a risk to the new provider. Do you see what I mean?

Ok I am very tired so will be logging off but - why is too much credit a problem (sorry complete amateur here!!!) - I also have to say I am very impressed with the helpful replies on this forum - beyond my expectations by some degree, cheers.

    Hi there,

It is Salary vs Available Limits vs Spent Limits

For example you may have 11.5k available but earn 6k so if you spend that 11.5 your are going to struggle to pay in back!

Back again - yes the risk posed by unused available credit makes sense - but with our income (over £3k/ month after tax) and the fact that the credit card account in question has been closed I think it is worth going back to Amex.

I will ring them tomorrow - can't hurt to ask.

I am beginning to think holding on to our egg money card (and hoping that I don't need to deal with their useless customer services again) may be the answer if Amex don't want us.

For what it's worth when I had a problem amex were very efficient. One phone call got a manager looking into it and I did get a callback when they said I would!

That is too true Innocent-guy - I could easily work myself up into a rant about how badly Egg dealt with a single fraudulent transaction on our card - one £30 payment in Nov.

Since then they have been totally ott about stopping the card - i.e. when we made a series of large purchases (over xmas !!!!!!!!) - without trying to get hold of us to check the validity of the transactions. The card is no use if you can't use it! The staff did not appreciate how annoying this was and never called back when they said they would!

I have heard many things about Egg customer service and lets say none of it has ever been positive.....

    Amex.

Bad points. Not always accepted everywhere. Always carry a credit card as well. Had to go back to them 3 times to get the correct cashback. You pay can by DD, and by Debit Card. They are at the upper end of the market.

Good Points; Customer services usually very efficient and professional. They will do deals but not on existing balances. They have non premium phonelines. They will call you next day if you are late with a payment (at the same time they freeze your account so this could be a problem if your in a shop and you haven't got another card!). They also use common sense if you appeal charges. Their call centres are UK based.

Overall I rate them highly. I have always considered them to be the upper end of the the market, and cautious with risk.

Re Credit Reports. Please bear in mind it can take six weeks for the latest information from a lender to appear on your account. So if you pay off a large balance, allow time for it to clear from the credit report before applying for another card and stating that you dont have a balance etc. Likewise, if you close an account it can take weeks to show. Then it remains on the file as settled for six years.
