Why have Amex rejected me????

Have just paid off a Halifax card and have had 'issues' with Eggs customer service, so I decided to apply for the Amex cashback card.

We have a highish mortgage but aside from that no debts as we pay off the egg every month, I am not working (raising young family) but my husband's earnings are in the 40% tax bracket so we have a healthy income.

I checked my credit report and the halifax card is still showing a negative balance - would that be why we were turned down by Amex? Is it worth appealing?

Your comments would be appreciated cheers!:o

Amex is classed as one of the hardest to get. maybe set your sights a little lower and don't worry about it. They aren't the best card to be honest, there are better cards out there (Tesco would be a good start if you want a healthy credit limit)....

This thread shows you who searches who - stick to the ones that link to your better credit report - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1033817

That is interesting. I have a friend who wants to apply for the Amex card. He is not a homeowner however has a spotless credit history. His Natwest MC limit is quite high.

Do you think that I should tell him to apply for a different card. He is intrested in cashback offers.

I do know that AMEX are offering some customers $300 to close there accounts.

It would be worth appealing. Was the application in your name or your husband's name?

Fwiw, I have an Amex Plat Cashback and my credit history is not perfect. I have 2 satisfied defaults from 2005 and 2007, so I wouldn't say that they are really hard to get.

I would appeal - you can send them copies of bank statements proving income, and 0 balance on your halifax cc

Yea they are offering US customers $300 - it was on the news cos they need to reduce US custom base (or liability)

I;d suggest unless he has a great score not to bother as they almost always reject. People with 1st Direct credit cards seem to get accepted if that helps (maybe cos 1st is the hardest bank a/c to get?)

Yea i've heard a few people have got an amex which is surprising but then its like a lot of card issuers, they seem to let people have cards who normally couldn't. Maybe they have to for equality or something! LOL Quick get the Human Rights people in hahaha

I'm just saying from other posts and forums that Amex is notoriously hard to get accepted for unless you have a perfect credit file. They just say "sorry, you do not meet our strict criteria for membership".....

I went for the nectar amex last May and was accepted. I was only 20 at the time but had perfect credit for 2 years with only 2 other cards paid off in full each month and a big income compared to my mortgage payments (so relatively large disposable income vs. commitments).

I was surprised to be accepted but I did have to jump through many hoops (proof of employment, proof of income, ID) and originally they only wanted to offer £700 credit limit but luckily due to their mistakes I managed to get it increased to £1400.

I wouldn't be surprised if you were declined from them especially with the economic situation only going from bad to worse.

Also, no offence, but if you and your hubby are financially linked, how do you know he doesn't have debt elsewhere that you aren't aware of?

Thank you for responses very useful:beer:

We have a First direct account and mortgage but not credit card.

We wanted a card to give us cash back as we do pay of the balance each month. As amex checked my credit report before it showed that halifax cc was paid off I may appeal.

Don't need a high limit particularly just some reward for using the card if poss. I hate eggs customer service but maybe we should stay with them as we have the egg money card and get a good return on that.

If you have 1st direct you may get accepted. That is a big may....

I got accepted for an AMEX almost a year ago and I was 20 years old with a £2400 limit. My OH got accepted 3 months later with a limit if £1500 at 21.

I had roughly £1000 @ 0% on a credit card (I think) at the time and a mortgage.

:rotfl:No offence taken - believe me my husband has no debts I am the reformed spendthrift he has always been thrifty - in fact his lack of credit history could be a problem as I always do the applications for cards etc.

If I appeal and am still rejected would that affect m credit rating...? So stressful trying to work out joint finances!
