Can anyone tell me roughly how much it costs to have a cat neutered?

I had my little boy's bits done a month or two ago. It cost £32. The vet told me that little girls are more complicated, and so their neutering costs more. BTW the practice I use is in Newry, N.Ireland, though I think that's a bit far away for you. But hopefully you'll find the info of use anyway.

My local vets have a payment plan for any high bills.Last summer both of my cats were ill (different things) which resulted in about £200 of treatment. They offered me the chance to pay it off at £10 a week if I wished.
  • I had to pay £90 to have a very poorly hamster put to sleep - £70 of that was because it was a Sunday. Shocking.

£90 to put a hamster to sleep  My local vet did it for free although this was a few years ago, they didn't charge for what they considered children's pets. My dogs more than made up for it though, She's cost £300 since christmas just because some yob smashed a glass bottle on the floor and her paw got infected.

i don't know of any websites, however you'll probably find that the old surgery type vets rather than the new almost supermarket type vets will be cheaper, the old school vet on the whole tends to be more geared to the welfare of the animal and not making the most amount of money from people, sorry if that offends anyone, but has an owner/breeder and exhibitor for many years thats been my experience of vets.

I totally agree with you. I work in the Veterinary business at an 'old style' practice and in our area this is definitely the case. We lost a number of clients to 'special offers' when Vets For Pets opened in Hull but a lot soon came back for that more 'personalised' service.

I don't think anyone has posted this yet but there is a national scheme run by the Dogs Trust (formerly NCDL) which entitles you to greatly reduced neutering for dogs if you are in receipt of certain benefits, including WTC. I believe at the moment the cost is £25 which is quite a sving, especially for a large dog.

Also, insurance is a good idea although you do 'get what you pay for' with cover. The cheaper ones are usually limited policies where they will only pay for a condition for twelve months. No good if your pet develops an ongoing condition such as diabetes! Look for a 'covered for life' policy with no time limits on each condition.

I think this may have been mentioned earlier but you can get a voucher towards the cost of neutering a cat from the Cats Protection League. I think it is £15 off castration and £20 off speying. Give your local branch a ring and they will usually send a voucher to a participating local surgery.

I think the amounts listed are correct but as I have been on maternity leave since August they may have changed slightly.

Another idea is to look out for national promotions from pharmaceutical companies for offers on flea/worm treatment etc.

Finally, my practice often offers a vaccine 'amnesty' where you only pay the price of a booster injection for a full course if your pets regular vaccines have lapsed. Perhaps others offer this too?

HTH someone, apologies for any duplicate info :)

    I've been Money Tipped!
My cat cost me £97.00 yesterday. She came home Saturday holding her paw up. I had no choice but to go to the vet to see what the matter was.

She had a small abses. The vet said could just give the antibiotics but better to have it lanced.

I could not believe the cost!! She was there all of an hour. I have to take her back to be checked tomorrow, she still wont walk on the foot and it still looks very swollen to me. I am expecting to be told needs this and that done and another £100 please...
  • That does seem expensive.... did they have to anaesthetise her as that does bump up the cost of treatment

i will never get a pet as i dont agree with vets charges
Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.:D
  • Re. the OP - make sure you compare like with like - my vet is expensive up-front, but all after care is included for the price, and they do free health and weight checks as often as every month if you want them - oh, and they're all lovely, because they pay well for good staff.
