Virgin is one of the more lenient about SIMs staying valid, usually over a year. 3 apparently doesn't expire at all, but a 3g phone is probably too expensive for a rare user to consider.

Some networks will reconnect on request in cases like this, but there are time limits to that as well.

I've read speculation that apart from using credit to make a call once in a while, some also need to have credit added within 999, but I'm not sure if this is true

You need to check SPECIFICALLY the requirements of the network to keep a PAYG SIM active - a chargeable call might work for some, other may require a TOP UP evey 6 months.

This is good advice. I personally have not come accross a UK network that requires a top up within a certain period to remain active. I have however come accross several UK networks that require one chargeable event within that time period (often 180 days) to keep the SIM 'alive'.

This is different in other countries. I have a Spanish SIM card which requires a top up every six months or it dies regardless of how many calls you make. Another Spanish network is the same but the time period is nine months.

Its 365 days for virgin, as mentioned this is stated in terms and conditions. All you have to do is make one call a year to avoid this happening

If you call virgin up & give them the mobile number they will send out a replacement sim with a new number free of charge
