Tell them to join the public sector ! The way people are talking on her it's a right barrel of laughs! Obviously they don't need any training and the job they do will be pointless, but hey ! Welcome ! AND they get a fantastic pension.

  • AND they get a fantastic pension.

    EDIT
and they think they are going to get a fantastic pension:p
Admittedly it's a bit OTT but at least it's better than some of the inane postings by some of the "thank you" lovvies on some of the other threads.

I agree it's a wee bit OTT but this is what (I think;)) is going to happen. This is what is going to affect people over the coming months and years. Private and public sector.
A huge proportion of threads on MSE degenerate into "ooh, what star sign are you" or recipes for cakes or similar nonsense after 5 posts. This is real and it will have a massive impact on everyone's lives over the coming years.
This folder is supposed to contain threads on the recession and finance, is it not?

I'm confused, I work in the public sector. I'm being sarcastic cos there are some right t=ssers o here being totally stupid and slagging off all public sector workers.
  • Maisymoo,
    Certainly!
The size of the problem (before the recent plunge in the stock markets, that will have made things worse):
    http://www.citywire.co.uk/personal/-/news/money-property-and-tax/content.aspx?ID=323921
So that's 1 TRILLION pounds of debt that will have to be paid out.
Clearly totally and impossibly unaffordable with an ageing population that is living longer (except teachers for some reason:rolleyes:)

Now even Crash Brown and his party are looking into curbing it.
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/pensions/4839331/Government-admits-taking-advice-on-cutting-public-sector-pensions.html

Now put it together. Even Comrade Brown knows he is in the Doo doo.
But with a general election coming up he can't be seen to do over all the millions of people he has "got into jobs" (hence lowering the unemployment rate) by signing them up to "work" in our obese public sector. I can't be bothered looking out the figures but I believe the public sector has expanded by about 1.3 million jobs since Crash Gordon and Labour came to power.

So Gordon will keep all this quiet as he can't possibly annoy all those millions of people who depend on the state just now can he? That's if he wants to win the election coming up in 12 months(maximum).

Brown winning the next general election!!!! Did I just write that???
    HA HA HA :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

So no matter who gets in next, the Public sector pensions are toast.
Enjoy thinking you have a bullet proof pension while you can!;)

I know you have an almighty shock coming;)

Thanks for that very detailed reply...however, I just didn't understand why you thought that Public sector don't pay their way? I understand they have far better pension schemes than private sector but we all pay income tax.
  • Yup we all pay income tax but my pension isn't guaranteed and topped up by the taxpayer. Private Sector get far less off the income tax back.

For every 6% Aberdeen council employees pay, in the taxpayer puts in 18%!!!
That simply does not happen in the private sector.

Fair comment...I just didn't agree with the way you put across your previous comment. Your view was not clear. Statistics...argh!

There's also evidence to support the view that LGP schemes are, even with employer (ie taxpayer) contributions of 16-20%, still significantly underfunded (some estimates suggest by 20 billion). Some schemes also have potential Iceland/Madoff deficits.

More money will be needed from the taxpayer unless (as seems unlikely for the forseeable future) the UK economy starts to show some signs of life.

I see that a number of council pension funds are considering sueing RBS in America. If they win who foots the bill - the UK taxpayer!!

Surley it is a good thing that more people are in jobs.
I have good friends that are soon going to be unemployeed and it sucks.

    Doesnt that tell you something?

What kind of state do you think the economy is really in. Mass unemployment after years of public sector job creation. Same old labour story no nationalised industry to create jobs with anymore so they have had to use the public sector as a job creating tool to meet their own political aim (which is to create jobs in unionised sectors). Not one of the jobs created has added a penny of value to the British economy and they have all weakened our competitive position.

The former social work chief in the Baby P case is fighting a £1m sex discrimination claim against her employer, it emerged today - on top of suing for unfair dismissal and launching a judicial review against her sacking.
She fell off the local government gravy train and is now trying to climb aboard the compensation gravy train.

Shoesmith, who ran a department with 1,000 staff and oversaw its annual budget of £100m, lost an internal appeal against her dismissal in January.
That amounts to £100,000 per head! That seems huge to me.
