Not rich people, no big house, no final salary pension, just hard working people.........?????

Were savers angry back in the 80's when interest rates were 17%?

I think saving rates reached around 10% but inflation was over 20%. It only occurred or a relatively short time (think about 6 months).

Your 1st post on this thread and most since are all based on assumptions, no fact at all, just road roughshot over everyone, according to you " all savers are nothing more than glorified moneylenders"....It sums you up to a tee.........the buying of houses wasn,t the issue on this thread, it was the impact on savers of the current situation. The problem is "f e c k less borrowing /lending full stop(whether it was for a house or boat or luxury goods)....its swings and roundabout far too many homeowners brought a house NOT for a home, its an investment and thats wrong, people WILL have to get back to buying a HOME . We can argue all day long about low returns on investments and the reasons why...

You talk a lot about assumptions but you seem to be making a few about me. You also seem to forget that all that f e c k less borrowing you talk about brought you a nice return on your investments. Now that the poor fools have borrowed too much and its all gone wrong you are unhappy. My point is that a lot of savers want house prices to go down, they want people to be repossessed and lose their homes, but they want the high interest rates too. They want it all ways.

For your information we saved a 10% deposit for our first home which was a small one bedroomed flat. We lived there for three years and we made about £2,000 profit on it. Thats the truth. The second place we bought was a two bedroom derelict cottage, it was the only house we could afford, we had to take out a bridging loan because the mortgage company wouldnt lend on it. We took six back breaking years of living on a building site, doing it up as we earned the money. Our first child was just born and the 80s recession came along and my husband lost his job. We had to move to a different town far away from family to a cheaper house to survive and get another job. We lived in that house for 20 years only moving when yobbos started throwing bricks through the window and setting light to garages. The house we now live in is very small and needs gutting but i hope it is home. I have never thought about profit and we have not made much, I just want a home to live in and enough money to survive, which is not too much to hope for after working for years. We are trying to pay off the mortgage over 10 years. I dont care about the price of this house going down as long as it is all relative and we can buy somewhere similar somewhere else if we want to.

Can we assume from your various statements that you dont give a !!!!!! about hard working families who get turfed onto the streets because they took out a mortgage when times were good and have since, through no fault of their own, lost their jobs and unable meet the repayments?

You have had a go at the other poster for making assumtions but you 'assume' all over the place.

DONT ASSUME THAT JUST BECAUSE PEOPLE HAVE BOUGHT A HOUSE FOR THEIR FAMILY TO LIVE, THEY ARE RECKLESS CHAVS

I dont blame you for wanting to save. I want to save too but I will save whether or not I get any interest on the money just because I want some security.

The point is your making a number of assumptions, something for which you have picked others up on.

You seem to have a problem with people who have borrowed money and are blaming them for the interest reduction on your savings.

    Bitter or what...

Thats beautiful !!!!!!? lump in throat time.......... wall-banging-head .......

Well I am glad for you because you see I care about people too. I admire people who work hard and save.

However, all I was saying was its a supply and demand situation and at present you have low interest rates. You have to get over it the way I have got over uncomplainingly paying thousands and thousands in interest over the years. I knew it was because I had borrowed on a mortgage and didnt begrudge the savers their interest. Now people are trying to pay back debts so savers are not so well off. We are trying to be wise and careful like you to help ourselves. So maybe you shouldnt begrudge us trying to get somewhere too. Incidentally i have paid into a pension for years and that will be hit.
