Our RAC cover just recently was due for renewal, we joined them last year as my wife was offered a deal for joint membership with about 40% discount.

This year they wanted something like £112 for the same cover. My wife called them to cancel the membership as it was on an automatic collection on DD / credit card and explained they were far to expensive compared to other providers.

The result, we've stayed with the RAC as they offered us another year for almost half the price - in fact less than we paid last year!!! We were very happy with the service (only used once for a flat battery - being a driving instructor and i was with a pupil i was highly embarrassed!). So phone them and haggle for a better renewal price - surely a motto of any money saver?

With respect to the previous thread about Tesco's - i believe this only covers the very basic like a jump start or to change a flat tyre - nothing more than that.

As with a number of things, generally you get what you pay for, although the odd little gem does come around - but i do find the bigger breakdown providers do tend to be a little more flexible. Years ago when a member of the RAC on my Dad's family package, my clutch cable broke. The RAC chap didn't have one on board, but we went and got one and he fitted it - the cost to me just a few quid for the cable. He could have just towed me home or to a garage (Saturday afternoon - no help really). He went the "extra mile" (sorry) and made my weekend!

On a final note - a lone female breaks down and calls for help - a priority case for the bigger providers and i'm sure the same for the rest as well. But would you prefer a familier yellow or orange AA / RAC van (or similar) pulling up behind you - or a grubby tow truck and grease monkey. I know i'm stating worse case scenario (and not meaning to be rude to tow truck drivers) but if that was my wife i know what i would be happier with....

In September last year I took out a policy with Norwich Union which included Rescue/Recovery/At Home and Onward Travel, quoting an introductory code from this site the Policy was £22.55.

In June this year I phoned them to ask how much extra it would be to upgrade to include European Cover (as we went to France in July), answer was 'No problem Sir, we can do that for FREE!! and they duly sent me an ammended policy at no extra charge.

I have today received my renewal notice, price now £71.73, online price for new policy with the same cover is £68.14, which I think is reasonable for an all inclusive policy.

However taking a new policy out online without the European cover is £42.14, plus I can pay interest free quarterly i.e. £10.53 (x4).

I have online quotes from all the other breakdown companies and this is still the most competative, and as I will not be needing the European cover in the next twelve months, this still appears to a good value for money cover, so I shall be staying with Norwich Union, but with a new online policy :)
  • I just took out a policy with AutoAid cost £32. I see the revised price is on the table of the special link web page, however, the main roadside rescue web page still has the old price (£29) in the table. I think a few links need updating.

Me too Square eyes. I've emailed Martin to let him know. Still took policy out though as still good value don't you think.
What if there IS no PMS and this is just my personality
  • Hi guys,

Thanks for the note. Some links were pointing to the old version of the article; this has now been amended.
  • Hi Everybody,

Just found this website last week and I think it is absolutely fantastic.
I am moving back to the UK from Cyprus next month and it is helping me so much with the many things I have to sort out.

Anyway what I would like to know is "Has anybody any personal experiences of
http://www.sharpinsurance.co.uk/brea...-insurance.php." The price seems great but so did "First Call", I was about to take this cover out and then read your reviews, so already this site has proved it's worth.

Just got quote from Norwich Union £102!!!!!!!!!!!

    Thanks

If only you did get a 'familiar yellow van', I would be less unhappy about paying the AA's prices. As all they've sent over recent years has been a 'grubby tow truck and grease monkey', I'd rather settle for the lower fee.

Not that they didn't do they job - but if my choice is between paying the AA £160 to phone a local garage to send a tow truck and paying Auto-Aid £32 to phone a local garage to send a tow truck, it's a no-brainer.
  • Hi again,
Just got a quote from Green Flag £34.50 and a special offer of HomeStart included in the Recover Plus policy.

Has anybody any dealings with Green Flag?
  • Hi all,

I note that you can get cheap RAC cover with Tesco vouchers. Can anyone help me out here with how you go about using your vouchers to obtain this discount? We normally just get vouchers sent to us in the mail and spend them in store - do I have to request special vouchers at all??

Thanks and sorry for being so dumb!

    Duncan
    Hi Duncan,
Did you get the answer please tell as I have vouchers to use also

    Hi,

I have not used the vouchers but did figure out how. All the new vouchers have an online code on them. To buy the RAC cover you would have to go to the clubcard website then start buying the RAC cover. At some point you have to enter the codes from your vouchers. The problem with the RAC one is you cannot part pay with vouchers so you need to have at least the required amount (I haven't got enough for the cover I wanted).

    Hope this helps.

    Duncan
