    Hi there

I was looking at joining Autoaid then looked at Green Flag (who I was with last yr thru Churchills). Rescue Plus (homestart+recovery+a few bits) was £61.95 for me and with £20 cashback thru topcashback = £41.95 which I thought was pretty good. I used Green Flag twice last year and they got to me in 40 mins first time and about 20 mins the second time.

    Hung up my suit!
I'm insured with Budget Car Insurance and they provide RAC roadside cover free with the policy. It doesn't provide an "at home" service and I haven't had to use it yet but it saved me my £70 renewal. And the car insurance was my cheapest at the time.

I also have my House contents and buildings insurance with them and that also includes Home Assistance cover at £4.99 pa. A lot cheaper than Direct Line who I used to use. There is one problem with switching to this cover, though. They both use the same contact company so when I cancelled with Direct Line they cancelled both policies so I had to get my Insurance company to set them right. Apart from that very good service. And, again, the insurance was the cheapest for me at the time.

February 06 - With self control I will be debt free in three years (apart from my mortgage!)
    Total - £25,000  Estimated Debt-Free date - January 2009 :j :rotfl:

July 06 - Made redundant and given early retirement
Total - £0 and replaced the car.

Now looking for a job to top-up the pension. :T

I just wanted all you moneysavers to know that when you are considering breakdown cover for yourself and family. Please make sure you read ALL the terms and conditions.
It is the RAC's policy not to recover you under your policy if you have a flat and have no working spare.
It just cost me £60 to have my son recovered after a blow out on the moterway 15 miles from home, as his spare was also flat, with a puncture. (yes his fault, but I pay for the cover to know my family can always get home, no matter what)
They quoted "driver responsibility" when i called to vent my anger. Which I guess also gives them a get out clause for other things too. So buyer beware. You may think that going with a big company is better. But it has now added £60 to the £145 i have already paid them.
I have had cover for 10 years and only used them 5 times max. Im disgusted at the service and attitude.
I will be cancelling my poilcy and find a much cheaper option. Thanks to Martins site I will have all the options available in front of me.
  • Has anyone had any hands on (as it were) experience with First Call yet? They state upto 1 hours labour charges covered only, does anyone know if this is the same for the majority? The price £42.50 seems too good to be true, being the skeptical soul that I am, I'm looking for the catch. The website seems very "simple" and the mail address is AOL!
  • I've found one online review for First Call and it's not good - the reviewer gave them 0 percent! You can check it out at reviewcentre.com.

For those of you (including me) who are getting a quote of £53.67 for EuropAssist instead of the £37.33 advertised on this site, which in both cases includes a £50 excess for homestart, then you might like to try Quoteline direct. They offer the same deal from the same company for only £59 and has no £50 excess for homestart.

Back in 1963, when I was 18, I took out life membership of the AA for £52.50. Since then they have added Home Start & Relay at no extra cost.

The best investment I have ever made. Even if you add interest it must be less than £15 a year.

I wonder if it would be worth someone just starting driving to invest in life membership now?
  • Hi I posted in an earlier thread then realised it had been closed (closed threads shouldn't allow any more posts?).

Anyway, I asked if anyone knew whether AutoAid covers flat tyres? They've got good reviews I know, but I won't be able to manage a wheel change on my own. Thanks.

does anyone know who's the cheapest and provides all of the following:
    • covers the car rather than person
    • home start (with no or low excess)
    • recovery (ie if can't repair car the same day will take you to your destination or home)
    • will provide assistance if wrong fuel, loss keys etc
    • and isn't pay and claim
(First Call doesn't cover "Running out of fuel, wrong fuel in vehicle, loss of keys, broken glass.", as does Halfords cover; GEM seems to cover the person not the car; and AutoAid is pay and claim.)

The cheapest i can find seems to be Europ Assistance at £59.00 via quotelinedirect.co.uk - can anyone find anything cheaper that does the same (even without the European cover)?

    Thanks in advance.

In their T&Cs it does say that you must have a usable spare, so I took that to infer that they cover you for a flat.
