The Cooperative Bank or Smile their internet version. As well as being ethical, they have excellent customer services, instant transfers between accounts and you can deposit and withdraw cheques and cash from all Post Offices.

Until I find out differently it appears to be the most ethical and sensible bank.

I have been with First Direct since its inception in 1989 and can only state that I have always fiund the service to be excellent. At first it was telephone banking but now with online banking it is rare that I need to ring/contact them.

If you are basing this on their profits, then HSBC are doing "even better" at double the profits

Standard Chartered pay shockingly bad rates, and don't focus on Europe

an Halifax account that has sometimes has better rates than most but a sometimes confussing internet banking and sometimes unreliable

Very surprised at this - Halifax online banking is normally rated very highly, and I've never had any issues using it / finding what I want on it
