Is there such a thing as a "cool" small car

Let me start by saying that I love cars.

I want to change my existing Ford Mondeo (V plate Zetec module). Now ideally I would get another Mondeo or Saab 9-3, Honda Accord or VW Passat.

However to keep 'er indoors happy I thought I might choose something a bit smaller.

Now I would want a 4/5 seater and have a budget of between £4k & £5k.

But what do I choose?

Focus - Quite like this, but the interior looks SO plastic
Golf - Again quite like this, but too dear, couldn't get a new enough model (GT spec)
Alfa 147 - Love the car, but it's an Alfa - how many problems would I have?
Astra - Nooooo, really don't like Vauxhalls - bad previous experience
Seat - Quite like the Leon, but is it cool?


So you can see my dilemma – how do I choose a smaller car and still retain a little bit of street cred?

I like the Leon, esp the cupra's. How about a Hyundai Coupe (if you can get past the badge).

Yep I was thinking of the Cupra Leon.

I like the coupe, but I must sound like a real snob becasue I do struggle to get past the Hyundi badge.

Meant to add to the list of small cars a Pug 307 or Renault Megane - Nooo on both counts as they are French and the missus already has a 307 so I have exeperienced their reliability

Out of the cars you've listed the Golf is probably the most 'cool'. It depends on your priorities and what you need from the car though.

Personally I don't care what other people think but if I was buying a fairly sensible family hatchback I'd get an Octavia vRS as they are very good cars and are quite 'cool' to people who know anything about cars.

I think any of the cars you have mentioned will enable you to retain the same level of street cred as a V reg Mondeo!!! :rolleyes:


If your looking to improve it:
A3, Golf, Leon in that order. Don't buy a poverty spec one tho!!!!!!!

As a outside punt i would go Skoda Fabia VRS.

"Cool" to the people in the know. To those that aren't you'll be able to outrun them either on pace or failing that fuel economy!!!

Couple more to think about...

Toyota Celica - getting on a bit now, but still has the looks. Plenty of good examples around.
Mazda RX8 - Looks great, but expensive to run / tax / service

Toyota Celica & Mazda RX8 - both great cars, but I think I would struggle to describe them as small cars.

I guess I am trying to be MS in looking for a replacement car, but I still want a little bit of excitement!

Do people honestly care what other people think about their cars?...I certainly do not.

It's not so much what other people think about the car I'm driving, its what I think of the car I am driving.

Can a Skoda ever be cool?
I know that they have improved beyond all comprehension to the early 90's rust buckets, but even still?????????

A new Skoda is a far better car than anything in your list, that is for certain, based on VW / Audi, only more reliable, and less cost.

Again the awful car snob in me struggles to see past the badge - sad isn't it!!
