The Government is funding free swimming for local authority leisure facilities for two years from April 1st 2009.
As I understand it local authorities will decide individually how to participate in the scheme. e.g. in the New Forest where I live - newforest.gov.uk/leisure, the scheme will be for over 60's and under 17's only. To register you need to provide evidence of age and address and a nominal 'one off' charge of £2.00 will be made. You will then be issued with a user card which must be presented to reception on every visit. This scheme is NOT restricted to New Forest residents as many centres are on the border with other districts.
    Happy Swimming!

Thanks Gardengirl48 :T - my boy is two this August so will be able to get him free swimming sessions. Just looked on our local authority site and they are doing free lessons from April for 2 years! (Up to Olympics - what a coincidence). Will save some pennies as really want his dad to teach him (I'm terrified of water).

    Pleased I spotted this thread...

My local council (Oxford) already provides free swimming for u17s, no one-off charge even. :)
    :www: :: MFi3 ::
Original mortgage free date ~ January 2030
Current mortgage free date ~ July 2028

When we have children, we get a motivation to do things, we would never EVER do without them. Because first and last they are the most important things. So I have managed not to flinch at any creepy crawlie in front of them including giant cockroaches (i absolute hate these). So maybe now it the time to address this fear. You OH is not always going to be around, or another swimmer, if an emergency occurred......
I want a job that is less than an hour driving away from my house! Are you listening universe?
  • Whereabouts do I find out what my local council is offering? I cant seem to find anything about this on their website.

Can you e-mail your local council like I did from their website? :)

What two options?!!! You've got me thinking
Share please! Give us a laugh!

    Edit
My council is on the list, but I searched their site and no mention of free swimming. Will phone them tomorrow.

I can go on what is known as an Aqua Package standard rate £20.25 a month which I cant afford and it would come to £202.50 a year

Special Rate £17 a Month which I can get which is about £170 a year and I can go to two leisure centres using this.I have to chat to my family today about it.

    love and light,

Our pool is closed until May, and nothing on their website yet.
Our children did get a free pass after school on a Friday as they share the Centre facilities with the school anyway. They had limited places so going free will benefit a lot more children :)

Anybody know if there is any similar scheme up in Scotland?
    Thanks

In Edinburgh there is free swimming for children at primary school age but as far as I understand it is not happening in Scotland.
Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.
