Plusnet are OK for normal internet surfing, but not the ISP to choose of you want to download a lot.
Probably the best ISP in the UK at the moment is Zen. They are truly unlimited and they dont use any form of traffic shaping to slow downloads (very very rare nowadays). I have not even had a minutes downtime or slowdown since I joined them about a year ago. They are dearer than a lot of ISPs, but you get what you pay for with this company.
Actually, I am a heavy user, I run a few websites and so I am always online - I download tonnes of stuff... but saying that I have been with them a long while. Maybe, deals for new customers are not as good.0 -
Edinburghlass wrote:You obviously didn't read to the bottom of the article. There is always another link to any affiliate linked website contained in Martin's articles.
Using one of the MSE affiliate links is a small price to pay to keep MSE ad-free, run these forums and donate large sums of money to charity.
Explanation
Two types of contacts are listed. The first help MoneySavingExpert.com stay ad-free and free to use, as they’re ‘affiliated links’ which invisibly take you via commercial price comparison services like Moneysupermarket or Find, which then pay this site per click. The second type don’t help, but is listed so you can choose.
You shouldn’t notice any difference, the links don’t impact the product at all and the editorial line (the things I write) is NEVER impacted by the revenue. If it isn’t possible to get an affiliate link for the best product, it is still recommended and still included. Read more about this site’s non-profit driven ethical stance.
Well actually I did read the bottom of the article but it does not change the fact that the information given is totally incorrect, because Tiscali do not allow unlimited downloads as stated in Martin's article.
I don't believe that readers of this site, who have signed up to Tiscali's poor service for at least one year, would agree that giving misleading and incorrect information is valid!
It just proves that there is no such thing as good impartial advice when money is involved.
Insert by Martin
Forgive me interrupting this post, but this is EXTREMELY important. Your synopsis above challenges the entire nature of the site. on NO account does the paid or unpaid nature of the link change everything. Take a look at best balance transfers where all the best 0% cards don't pay. In fact take a look in the broadband article itslef - some recs pay some dont. The big recommendation for Madasafish is NOT a paid one. When articles are written it is purely on best buy - after that we try and get the links that pay - the article isn't changed.
Now I understand your disquiet about Tiscali - but let me refer you to another part of the article.
"When writing about broadband providers I always take a deep breath. My Chat-Forum clogs up with people writing “I can’t believe you rate the hideous provider X”. Often the next post applauds the very same provider. So unless a disproportionate number of complaints have been made (when I note it), I simply judge on price as service is much of a muchness. To help, use the Chat Forum link to read others’ opinions or www.adslguide.org.uk is a great website where real techies discuss the issues."
Tiscali is one of those providers which i've had great and terrible feedback from. Simple as that!

 Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

That's not quite true. The 30GB allowance is for premier users (£21.99 per month) and is for peak time usage (4pm-midnight). The overall usage cap in a month is 100GB for premier users. There is a further cap of 20gb (currently 8am-midnight for certain apps, mainly p2p/ftp)0 -

Plusnet are quite open about their traffic shaping policy. I remember the storm last year when they introduced it. For normal surfing, this can mean better/more constant speeds, but for anyone that wants to download a lot, Plusnet are not really the best ISP to use.How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Another long term Pipex satisfied customer here.
Uk based call centres too!
If you are on Nthell you will want to avoid Virgin (who use Nthells) and AOL who have "offshore call centres" which can be very difficult to understand.0 -

Yep, gotta agree... and if your local exchange is LLU (Local Loop Unbundled) then the costs are half as much again.
22 Meg works out at £30 and NO DOWNLOAD limits, AT ALL...
CS and Tech are brilliant, first class!! Why I hear you cry??? Mainly because they know what you're talking about, and more importantly know what they are talking about!!!!
Oh, and their free phone number is 0800 0533 222... destination is the same as the 0845 locall rate one...
Some other facts about UK Online... they're a subsidiary of EasyNet, who have just been bought out by Sky.
As a residential customer you get a Static IP address, as they don't currently have the facility to offer a dynamic one (they don't tell you this, but I found out through Tech Support), so no extra cost there if a static IP is your thing.
Please note the original number I posted was wrong and has now been amended0
