Cheers I had no shortages of offers for pulling my plonker in Krakow
It was just the guys at the airport were still only selling 200 fags per person.
Thanks for the reassurance as I am going back next month.0 -
How cheap is cheap? Could you get a hotel room for £50? (I think sometimes Eastern Europe can be a bit pricey with hotels...) How much would a half litre of beer be? Do they have nice restaurants? What sort of price might they be? (Just as a guideline.)
What time of year would you go? How long would you go for? Four nights, or less or more?
I have just been to Paris, which was lovely, of course, but the Euro and the general cost of living there made me feel like a pauper...
I was in Krakow two week ago, check out Hotel Cracovia on Hotels.com.
I stayed three nights for £45 room only. £15 a night there was excellent, room cleaned everyday and fresh towels couldn't complain at all. It's about a ten minute walk into the centre square. Plus get the bus to the hotel from the airport if anyone is staying there, the bus stops right outside the hotel and the fare is 2.60 Zloty in the region of 50p. I will definitely go back to Krakow, it's a lovely town.0 -
Also, approx. 3 hours away you're at Zakopane in the Tatra Mountans, which is so worth a visit. Check it out here

We returned from 4 nights in Krakow on Saturday.
We paid £10 each return on Ryanair from Prestwick. (on time, no problems!)
We paid £184 for a triple room with an excellent full breakfast at the 4* luxury hotel Andels which is opposite the train station and central for everything. Booked through Alpharooms.
We visited Auschwitz using the bus (very easy and very cheap).
We visited the salt mines using the train (again easy and cheap)
No need for expensive guided tours.
Everything in Krakow is easily walkable.
We found the cost of eating out very good.
All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our bargain break in very cold, very snowy Krakow.0 -

.
Although I think it depends where you intend to go. I only used a guide for The Royal Private Apartments because you're not allowed in without one. However, I would with hindsight definitely use a guide for my visit out to Plaszow as there is no information there and most guidebooks don't even mention it. In fact many guide books don't even mention Podgerze. I think this is a visit to one place that it would have been worth paying money to a guide for. On the other hand locations like Auschwitz are well known and trips there easily self guided.Yeah, whatever. I'm a grown up, I can take it...0 -
Has anyone been there in the summer? Would it be warm there then, without being too busy, or am I asking for a bit much?!0

Well I went to Warsaw last August and it was sweltering - and that's quite a bit further north. We ate outside every evening.Yeah, whatever. I'm a grown up, I can take it...0

We visited Poland a couple of years ago and loved both Krakow and Wroclaw.
Top tip is to pick up a free guide book by InYourPocket. We found they were freely available in hotels but you can download a PDF copy on the web link below.
http://www.inyourpocket.com/poland/city/krakow.html
We found they were top notch for bars, restaurants and city sites and contained objective and sometimes fairly amusing reviews. The guides were regularly updated (I think it was quarterly) so you are unlikely to end up on a wild goose chase for some place that shut down 6 months previous.
Free guide available for plenty of other european destinations as well.0
