my fiance bought me an engagement ring and as they didn't have one in my size he had to buy one and have it re-sized. He has since proposed to me

Eh? I don't get the timings here.

He bought an engagement ring , he knew it would need to be resized, then he proposed. Or did he propose twice?

I had no idea what ring my Mrs wanted - but did know I would get ripped off at a high street Jeweller. Was on business in the US and bought the stone over there at a MASSIVE discount to what I would have paid in the UK - bought it through a broker, only release my money after I had it appraised by a third jeweller (even though it was certified). Brought it home, proposed as a surprise with just the diamond - then took her to an independent jewellers to design the setting/ring.

If I had my time again, that is how I would do it again! I saved enough money to get a flat screen plasma (that was back when flat screen plasmas where three and a half grand!) - she got her dream ring!
A friend of mine did it this way too and his gf was so chuffed :D

I'd have been chuffed too - especially if the saving on the diamond was £3500.

My daughter got engaged ion Xmas day and she had a white gold ring. After 6 weeks she noticed a dark mark on one side so she took it back to H Samuels and they told her that gold is sprayed to make it white (silver) and she was told that when she bought it. They actually never told her anything of the sort but said she could have it recoated free any time in the first 12 months. As she told them she would expect it after about 1 to 2 years but not 6 weeks.
What would you do about this?

I had a white gold ring and it discoloured in no time. When I bought a platinum ring from a very reputable jeweller they told me this would happen with white gold. Not too sure what to do about it though as I just put mine in the jewellery box and don't wear it anymore. x

White gold is not sprayed, its dipped in rhodium. Its has the same base elements of yellow gold, which has a white metal mixed in during the process, which would prob be silver or palladium. Then has a rhodium coating. Its has no guarentee as far as timelines go, each person is different as it can be affected by something as simple as your natural skin oils.

The saving on the whole ring was about 3,500. Diamond cost four grand in the states. Metal, design and build for the ring cost about 450 quid - total cost 4,450. Took it to independent valuers who knew nothing of how it came about for an insurance valuation - they said eight grand! I suppose that shows just how huge Jewellers mark ups are.

(to be honest I would have bought the telly anyway! but it was nice to justify it at the time!)
