I have one concern, i notify the council of my change of addres for council tax but am i liable for council tax on my mortgaged property untill NR reposses it?
I hope not0 -
Hi,
By all accounts, you won't be liable for the first 6 months. After that I guess it'll be up to your local council how they charge you.0 -
Hopefully it will be repossesed by then0

Sorry me again, so for the first 6 months when i move i pay the ocuncil tax on the rental property instead of the mortgaged property then if the mortgaged property has not beenrepossesed after 6 months the council may ask me to pay for both. Is this correct?0

You need to apply to the council for council tax relief on the unoccupied property - it isn't automatic or backdated.

hi i'm in the same sort of boat as you
we move into rented acc on 1 april and then giving house up for vol repo.
spoke to my local council today and what i was told to do was send in a letter explaining that house going for repo, that it will be vacant and unfurnished and the date of leaving. also include forwarding address for correspondance. lady from council said that this would then entitle me to free council tax for first 6 months and thereafter i would be liable for council tax but would get it at 50% of normal charge per month as property vacant
hope this helps

Mrs T.Thank you for that hope it get reposessed before that, But is suppose they are busy at the moment.
You need to prepare for the worst. In my case, the last mortgage payment was in May 08. My repossession hearing is tomorrow. I fully expect the sale to take another 4 - 6 months.
I am sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings here, but it could take 12 months. But I truly hope not.BSC No 248

Phone the council tomorrow and tell them your property will be vacant and you will be paying council tax at another property. Then ask them if they will give you relief from your council tax at the old property. I'm not sure of all the ins and outs but you should be clear after your phone call. Be sure to get the person's name you speak to and ask if they will send out something to say you don't have to pay the council tax.what does this involve? sorry for being silly
