But Robert Tressell in The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists - which is brilliant and everyone should read it - has a good explanation of how "the money trick" is what enables some people to take the profits from other peoples work.

And, going back to the general point of what 'utopia' would look like, Ursula Leguin has some interesting scifi novels exploring that (eg, The Dispossessed)

    My "Utopian" ideal

A comfortable roof over my head
Warm and supportive relationship with friends, family and wider community
Walking distance to local shops, selling less variety, more locally grown/bred produce at reasonable prices
A public transport system that works, thereby reducing the need for a car
    No crime
A banking system which serves for the customer
A Healthcare system that works - and is sufficient to meet demands
A job which benefits others (and is not just a profit making machine)
Enough money to satisfy my family's needs
    Nice weather (!)

I'm a simple soul (Or, I'd like to be!)
Poor and content is rich enough!
  • My Utopian ideal.

Ipswich Town in the premier division where they belong.
Nothing else really matters after that.

I've so enjoyed reading this thread, thanks everyone!
  • Part of me thinks go back to our "Empire" days, birch the kids and keep women barefoot, pregnant and chained to the kitchen sink while men trample everyone down to conquer the world.....and then part of me quite fancys a big sort of Love-in, hippy, eco-friendly world where we all live in sandals and grow mung beans..hmm I just can't decide...
