Options
hi we r going to america next month and really like to take advantage of nationwides zero fee for charging abroad. having been with halifax for 22 years of my life i was refused a credit card they used experian. wife and i have a joint account with hsbc only been with them for 3 years and they have accepted us for a credit card. having read stories of delays in the card we would like to apply for the nationwide. anyone know if nationwide use experian for credit ratings because i'm baffled why halifax refused and hsbc said yes

  • Did they say why they refused you? Might be worth getting your credit report just to check all is OK. Some companies are more stringent then others, I've been refused in the past and been given a decent card and limit after appealing.
2p off is still 2p off!
  • i semi applied for a nationwide and said i should be on the electoral roll which i thought was the same for all cards . to be honest i only want a nationwide card coz of travelling abroad. do u think i should try my luck on carrying on with the application ?

In which order did you search them? Rejection might have something to do with the number of searches done in quick succession.

Also, you mention you had a Halifax account for 22 years. If it was a bank/savings account, then it is a totally different department within the company and they dont take that into consideration. Thats what we were told by them anyway.

Credit Reference Agencies - Who uses who?. According to this, Nationwide use Experian.

Nationwide are very 'choosy'. Try to apply in parallel for their current account. You don't have to switch account or salary. Even if you get it with a cash card, this card (Cirrus) has the same advantages when withdrawing money abroad.
  • do u mean open an account and apply for a credit card at the same time?

I mean apply for an account and for a CC at the same time. You cannot just 'open' an account. You must apply and be accepted.

If you have a credit application refused it's always sensible to try to find out why. Most lenders will tell you the main reason if you ask, and if it's something like the fact that your name isn't on the electoral roll at your current address you can do something about it and then ask them to reconsider your application.

just been to nationwide to open an account with them have no debts always in credit with savings aswell when they did my credit rating they could only offer me a basic cash card. apparently there is a utility bill i havent paid for or delayed in paying because i moved house which is a total of £21 . i've now applied for a credit rating to see what this £21 is.

The cashcard is still good for taking money out of ATMs whilst abroad, however.
