Where to eat in York?

Can any one reccomend good places to eat in York? We are going there for a couple of days in May. Both restaurants and also tea rooms etc. Places near the centre, but not too expensive!
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

The place to go in York for afternoon tea is Bettys its expensive and sometimes has queues but for a special treat worth it.
I prefer the tearoom at the Art Gallery it is reasonable has homemade cakes fairtrade tea and coffee and you can look at some of the art in the gallery afterwards.

This might sound silly, but the Ask restaurant in York is in a wonderful grand old town hall building, within the city walls and not too far from the Minster.
We decided to eat there purely on the building, when we hadn't been living in the UK for very long and didnt realise that Ask was a chain restaurant.
If you are going on a Saturday night though, I would try to book a table as when we were there, they were very busy.

If you like a curry try Akbars. A meal for two can be had for £30 and it's excellent.

There's a lovely restaurant at the back of the market - sorry I can never remember the name but it's something Italian! They have some great dishes, not all typical Italian, quite a variety, and not very expensive either. It's always packed when we go so others agree!
  • Dont go to the carvery restaurant (Russells?) on Coppergate - rubbish service, naff soggy veg and rubbish dessert

Such a shame it has gone downhill as used to be very nice in there!
  • Mulberry Hall, a very posh fine china shop on Stonegate, has a lovely little tearoom upstairs which is quite reasonably priced. My grandma, who is a lady of fine tastes, always raves about it and considers Betty's to be overpriced and overrated.
  • Ask in Blake Street is good. Ristorante Bari in the Shambles - traditional italian. Gert and Henry's in Jubbergate (market). Pizza express - museum street/lendal bridge is always good. Fellini's - another italian - in Fossgate.
La Tasca - back swinegate - food always good, service can be variable.
Indochine in ?Cumberland street and Kings Ransom (Indian) in the same street - one of the streets going down to the river off Clifford Street anyway. As a lifelong York resident I've tried a few..................

We've just come back from a three day break. we ate in Pizza express which was as good as always and Cafe rouge which was dreadful.

In the day we found a great greasy spoon (but much better than I'm making it sound) called Piglets tucked away down a little alley near cafe Rouge.

Great great food and fab service

    Yeah..whatever
  • We like Oscars - tucked behind Mulberry hall off Stonegate. There is GBK near the Museum gardens and I often see bogofs for there on MSE.
For me the treat is Betty`s, last time we had a lovely lunch there for two for £35. That was two mains, desserts with drinks.
