So why does it need a whole engine when only the valves are bent?
do you know its just the valves? have you seen the state of the con rods? what about the new head bolts and gasket kit? you havent priced these in your expert diagnosis.
only a used head and a timing belt kit? who do you think you are? the A team?
minimum for a timing belt snapping is going to be at least £450. and who is to say it will run perfectly?
ive seen plenty of engines with time and money spent on them to do just this procedure and they end up costing more in the long run.
the best bet is a used engine with a new belt kit on it....work permit granted!0 -

Why would the conrods be bent?
Which is the weakest point, the valves or the rods?
Not all headbolts need to be changed when you change a head.

It's what a mechanic would do.goldspanners wrote: »minimum for a timing belt snapping is going to be at least £450. and who is to say it will run perfectly?

dave,im sure we've been here before?
a chancer would use your methods.
a real mechanic that knows the risks involved would always use new head bolts, head bolts stretch when they are torqued down. if they have been stretched too often they wont hold the head tight enough which can cause loss of power or leaks.
i would rather spend £500 and see it done right rather than spend £300 and risk it,as it could well be a waste of £300....work permit granted!0 -

The two on here that are trying to wind us up - do not work on cars or vans or anything with wheels on it. They have no idea of the complexity's of the problems that can arise and how the cost can escalate.
Which is why, the cheapest, simplest, easiest way is secondhand engine - but even so, the work is more than the car is worth.
And if David mentions 'head' again - he is likely to have his kicked in..
and I will invite him to spend many hours in our workshop - he will be made to help, clean up, wash floors and make tea, in between watching (not assisting) engine rebuilds, swaps and the odd gear box rebuild and swap too.
He's banned from watching general servicing as that may excite him too much. He will also have to provide all the biscuits and cakes for tea times.Genie

An honest mechanic only replaces the parts that need replacing.

yes, your right, air cooled engines dont have as much of a need for them to be changed every time.
but as this is a water cooled good practice is to change the freaking bolts....work permit granted!0
