I asked my partner he said a quote from a skilled painter and decorator could charge you approx 400-500 pounds,His quote as a painter and decorator would be 220.00.

  • Hah! Very interesting. I got two separate quotes from Dulux Accredited painter/decorators for exactly the same specs as the OP (with a bit of woodwork thrown in) and was quoted £3,000 and £2,800 respectively. I was also told the job would take 2 weeks!

  • We have recently had our hall stairs and landing redecorated by a painter and decorator. It took him 3 full 8 hr days to do. Walls and woodwork in pretty good condition and he did two coats of paint. There are 14 doors only two of which were painted (small pane glass) as we are replacing the rest. Whilst the skirtings and facings were white and only needed washing, rubbing down, undercoat and top coat, our window sills are really dark brown gloss and needed 3 undercoats and 2 topcoats. What a difference though!

Was charged a reasonable £15 per hour (£360) and he has done a super job. He did all our last house too so we knew his work was good.

Good luck with finding a more reasonably priced tradesman. We are in *********** but lived in London for nine years. We actually paid to fly a decorator friend of a friend down once to paint our flat and put him up for a week as we could not find a decent painter at a reasonable price!

Thanks for your replies. I was actually trying to gauage how much to pay my mum who has done ours in 2 days and done a terrific job.

Unfortunatley I offended her by offering and she refused to take anything. We are both very grateful though and expecting a baby in May so every little helps.

What about taking her out for a nice meal, or for a day out with lunch on you. Cheaper than the £650 we were quoted!!

Believe me, that has occurred to me. Trouble is, I don't have any decorator friends! :(

We have been quoted £100 a day with the possibility of it taking 5 days. Is that unreasonable?

11 white doors to be glossed mind!

why not have a go yourself - I find it therapeutic & stress relieving - I throw on CD's I haven't heard for ages (even my schoolday 80's stuff) & sing(!) as I'm painting - time goes by & I save a fortune - I must do an OK job as I'm 1st on the list when family & friends want decorating done
  • You could always try contacting any agencies that do work experience type of stuff for vulnerable people. I used to know one who would train young people with mental health problems and charge people a bare minimum - all the trainees were supervised at all times and were all very well when working, which was monitored. It was a great way for people to get good cheap work done and great for the trainees to get the training and build their confidence.
You would probably find these sort of schemes thorugh your local MIND or listed in one of the local papers.

I did try doing the bathroom and made a right pigs ear of it and now having to redo it. Not quite sure my standard of decorating is up to the Hall stairs and landing, LOL!
