I really hate it when schools do things like this. Dd has to dress in red -she owns nothing red and the only other red garments in the house are the boys' football shirts which she's refusing to wear. She thinks I should go and buy her something:rolleyes:

Anyway here's my sugestion -invisible cakes:p

Tell me about it Thrifty- DD has to dress up as something begining with the letter 'T'. (So shes going as tinkerbelle thankgoodness and DS has to go 'topsy turvy' - ie clothes the wrong way round/inside out etc.

I'm all for raising money for charity, but please make it easy for us!

Oh, I tried the invisible cakes but DD is having none of it

what about rice crispie cakes - could do half milk chocolate and the other half white chocolate in the cases, not too expensive can buy the cheaper chocolate and a big box of ricecrispies! could even add a cherrie too to add the red nose part!

Glad its not just me that gets annoyed with schools dropping these things on us  My youngest DS has to go to school in pajama's on Friday. All well & fine but I'll have to go and buy him some decent looking ones that he'll hardly wear as he likes to sleep in boxers & tee shirts like his elder brothers :p Any jammies he does have are the short legged ones  At least the high school that the older ones attend/attended just want £1 donation and usually go for something simple like wear one item of red clothing. Oh well, he'll be there in September & I'll probably be feeling all sad & misty eyed at the passage of time with them all :rotfl:

DD came home today saying she had to have some red skinny jeans and needed to go into town. What for? Comic Relief, she has to dress all in red and has to wear skinny jeans. I told her I'd ring the school and complain that their policy was unfair to low-income families. All of a sudden it was "well all my friends are getting red skinny jeans...can't Granny pay for them?":eek::mad:

I've told her that if Granny could afford them then Granny would probably be happier, as would I, if the money were donated direct to Comic Relief - maybe that's a good tack for dealing with ever more demanding schools. We've compromised on red leggings - on condition that she can find them for sale locally for less than £3 ;)

Anyway, after much confabulation with the natives (hubby and kids), our suggestion would be 'snotty noses'. Basically your standard iced fairy cake with a cherry but hollow out a small hole beneath the cherry and fill with yellowy-green icing or lime jelly before decorating. We have no idea whether it'll work but it sounds fun!

I hadn't thought of that - was just feeling quite relieved that my son has to wear his PJs which I thought quite easy, and had already asked him which ones he wants to wear, and hidden them at the back of his wardrobe so he doesn't wear them in the meantime. Though I can foresee a bit of an argument as I told him he should wear pants and a vest or t shirt under them if wearing them during the day to keep warm but he thinks he is just going to get up in the morning and not have to get dressed!

Love the idea of invisible cakes!!
  • I am making some whoopie cushion cakes - I am going to make some ordinary fairy cakes, but instead of putting the cake cases inside fairy cake tins so they hold their shape, I am just going to put them on a baking tray so they "spread" a bit IYKWIM - then I am going to take them out of the cases when they are cool and cover them with red regalice so they look like little whoopie cushions and write RND 08 on with white writing icing.

DD's school won't let them have anything to do with Comic Relief because it's a catholilc school:confused: so I am spared the pressure of having to come up with outfits etc. but DD2 is having some friends for a tea party - the kids have to pay a donation to come to the party - only £1 and for that they get a little tea and a whoopie cushion cake!

I have some gingerbread man cookie cutters with bites taken out of them.

    These: http://www.worldwidefred.com/abc.htm

You could do something similar and make some round biscuits then cut a bite shaped mark out of the side of them with a fluted cutter. :D

    love the idea of these....
ds2 and dd2 need things to sell on fri. can get away reasonably lightly as regards dressing up as they are having a mad hair day.. ds1 and dd1 are having an 80's day(dd asks what did you wear in the old days mum:mad:) or an inside out day:confused:

How bizarre:confused: my kids go to catholic schools and they never miss an opportunity to join in these charity events.

Why can't they all just say 'bring a pound and where your own clothes'. So much easier.

    Wear. :rotfl:

I agree though. I'd rather the silver donation then all the mucking around.
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)
