Halifax and the farce that is bank charges!

I have just got off the phone from a v patronising guy at Halifax and had to moan to someone!
By mistake I used our joint accont to secure a free trial with Blockbuster DVD rental. I was meant to use my account but got the wrong card out of my purse. When the free trail ended, £12 came out of my account which failed. Fair enough, my fault and I got a charge of £35. Unfortantly, I did have another Direct debit coming out for £2.99 which I did have the money for. However, even though they both came out the same day, Blockbuster applied for their fee before the other company so Halifax failed them both. My bank charges increased to £70. As if that wasn't annoying enough, Halifax have them charged me £28 for going overdrawn?! I don't understand how they can charge me twice for what is the same problem? £35 for not having the funds and then £28 for them paying the funds and me not having it. For the sake of a £12 bill, (which I take full responsability for,) I get £98 worth of charges. I actaully feel sick about it. We are just manging to get by and I only signed up to the free trial for a treat. I realise I should have canceled it and have learnt my lesson but its a joke.
What makes it worse is I had an awful Halifax employee talking to me like a five year old and telling me if wasn't Halifax's fault that I had overstretched myself and couldn't honour all my commitments. I felt like telling him that my blooming taxes was paying his wages and Halifax were in no place to lecture someone on being irresponsable with their money.
It's just so so annoying. My mistake will no doubt help fund another 'Executives' already over inflated bonus!!

Did you cancel the Direct Debit (Yes or No)
If No, then not having sufficient funds in your account are the reason as to why you got charged. Next time use a account manager or online facility.
You fee does not feed some greedy executive, but keeps my banking cost to a minimum.0 -
Thanks for that v helpful reply!
I was having a vent with this being the vent board. As I said in my post, I didn't have the money but being charged two sets of bank charges is annoying. And I will sleep well at night knowing my mistake is helping you out.0 -
I know from personal experience that if you really push the Halifax with reclaiming your charges/complaining to the ombidsman etc...they will cave in & refund you, hope that helps0

I'll have a go. Thanks for your help. x0

And thats exactlly whats wrong
Muppets use money they dont have, ignore the terms they signed then expect to be bailed out by others.
Heres an idea. Read your terms and follow them and dont blame others for your mistakes.

My thoughts are this forum is not to judge and call people muppets which is just plain rude.0 -

Calling somebody a muppet for voicing their frustration at a matter that has been proven to be unfair is ridiculous. How anybody could justify charging £98 for a refused payment of £12 is beyond me?
In addition LinasPilibaitisisbatman i think you will find on the terms of this board that you are not to insult people. So maybe you should consider practising what you preach and read the code of conduct!!0 -
it looks like £35 was charge for £12 declining, then £35 for other d/d declining and £28 for going over limit.
I know you probably knew this op, just clarifying how I see it.0 -
These forums are called Vent forums for a reason; it is not for 'us' to vent our frustrations; it is for those who are unable to interact elsewhere be it on the forums or in fact in real life, to vent their 'lack of interaction' on people who have actual frustrations. It's a shame there isn't an 'ignore' button.
OP if you can't push for the money back; seeing as these charges HAVE been proved unlawful, you could let the dust settle and then start to claim the money back via the 'normal' means, via this websiteJust an idea.
