It's had the opposite effect for me. It is so warm outside I had to remove lots of layers so was freezing when I came home. Stuck the heating on instead of more clothing.0

Hi, my first post in this section of MSE
Total gas usage for last 3 weeks:
week to 09/02 = 10.5 cu.ft.
week to 16/02 = 8.1 cu.ft.
week to 23/02 = 5.3 cu.ft.
Central heating has been on for an hour twice a day (thermostat 16 deg), and an extra hour here and there if I get cold!
I've switched it fully off today and I'll see how that goes this week.
I'm a bit confused about converting cubic feet into kWh - I was given the formula "(cubic feet*2.83*1.02264*40.5)/3.6" (which I think I read elsewhere on MSE) but I notice you're using different formulae in this thread, or perhaps your starting "units" aren't cubic feet? Am I doing something wrong? Any clarification helpful! Thank you!0 -
If you're using 5.3 cu ft per week that is astonishing - even less than me. The imperial meters do measure in cubic feet but in hundreds of cubic feet. The meters are usually marked just cubic feet because they do not include a decimal point - they just change size and/or colour. So you used 5.3 units or 530 cubic feet or about 170 kWhs
Anyway, when you multiply that sum from your bill out for an imperial measure you should find out it comes to 31.x or 32.y. For a metric meter it's about 11.z.0 -
Thank you Kim! 5.3 cu ft is just for the last 7 days, that's the lowest it's been for a while - as you can see it was almost double two weeks ago (hence why this thread caught my eye after I took the reading today).
Since the beginning of November the average is 7.0 cu ft per week. In summer average was about 2.0 cu ft (probably on the high side for summer use because I only started paying more attention when it got colder), and the average since I started taking weekly meter readings at the end of last May, is 4.1 cu ft.
Thanks for clarifying the multiplication for me

I just received by online gas bill, and Im very happy with it. Ive tried hard this winter to be sensible with the GCH.
Winter quarter - 92 days with online discount (Eon) came in at £238, which worked out at an average of 69 kWh a day. Ive even promised the Mrs we can have more heat next winter;). Im going to make sure my DD is not too low as it was last year, causing a massive jump in our monthly payments.0 -
Kim - you said "So you used 5.3 units or 5,300 cubic feet or about 170 kWhs".
You have been too generous with your '0s'.
5.3 units of gas on an imperial meter represents 530 cubic feet not 5,300.0 -
I knew that. I was just testing so my enemies could laugh at me and be disarmed by my cunning bait. Or something.0

Hadn't noticed Kim.0

Missy,
The 40.5 in the conversion formula you quoted is the calorific value of the gas. This can - and does - change from time to time and is the only variable in the formula. The value quoted on my Dec08 bill was 39.191 wheras the value on my Aug08 bill was 39.0303.0
