I have a desktop connected wireless and a laptop that used to connect wireless. Thought I had a router problem so router was replaced by my ISP but still can't connect laptop via my router. I can get on line using my dongle (if that will help).
Looking at the status on my laptop now it says:
Unidentified network (Thomson)thats's the new router Access Local Only
I have tried working through this with my ISP without any luck..... Can anybody help with this one

First try connecting the laptop to the router using an ethernet cable, if this works then you know it must be an issue with the wireless connection. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Hi FreddieM
If you can get online on one machine then it means the other wireless is acting up, this could be a number of things like your wireless is turned off (!! i know, but you'd be suprised how many times ive seen it!)
Check to make sure its on, then go to your wireless network config utility (usually gets installed with your wireless card) and input your WEP key.
If you dont know what this is go to your other computer and go to its wireless settings and theres a box that says to show the network key, check it and you should have a 10(ish) long alphanumeric key, copy it exactly (uppercase letters and numbers) into your non-working wireless and try to connect.
Along the road you *may* be asked if you want Windows to deal with all your wireless connections, personally I'd recommend you do (if you havent already), it makes diagnosis easier.
If that doesnt work, post the model of your router etc to try and help you further.

Hope some of that helps. By the by one of the problems suggested by my ISP that maybe Avast AV was conflicting. I have uninstalled this (Temporarily hopefully) but it did not change anything and TBH I mirror all the security I have on my desktop with my laptop.Hi FreddieM
Hi Ascended, I have just tried a direct connection via the ethernet cable, so no luck there

Have you tried disabeling all firewalls temporarily, then try, if it works, then try enabeling 1 by 1 (if you have multiple firewalls that is).
Do this wired:
If wired isnt working either, then try running the network setup wizard from Control Panel > Network Connections > In the left Network Tasks Panel select Setup a Small Home or Office Network.
Click Next, Next again, Next (Is there anything in the Disconnected Hardware Box? If its your wireless then let me know, if not choose to ignore it by checking the checkbox) If not, click next, Choose the "Connects through a residential gateway" option and finish the wizard, no need to copy it to other computers.
Restart the computer and try to connect.
If it works, then try wireless.

I am currently looking for the list of AV/Spyware progs I have on here, it was in a thread relating to too much AV/SpywareHave you tried disabeling all firewalls temporarily, then try, if it works, then try enabeling 1 by 1 (if you have multiple firewalls that is).
I uninstalled Avast because my ISP said it was probably the likely cause (Wrong) as the problem remains. I can't find where to disable my Anti Spyware TBH

Here we are: By the way, my laptop is on Vista but desktop runs XP
of these I need and which I don't. I currently run:-
Avast
Spybot
Malwarebytes
Antispyware
HijackThis
CCleaner
I'm guessing that anything MS have also going on in the backroundIf youcan lie down at night knowing in your heart that you just made someone’s day just a little bit better, you know you had a good day!!0 -
I cant imagine that too much protection would cause it to block your router access, unless all the programs at the same time are trying to connect to the internet at startup for updates and its causing your router not to respond....
Give your antimalware a run on your computer and see if it helps, it could well be that some malware has alterd the settings, and your Hosts file.
Run a thorough scan in safemode to remove any traces of it, restart in normal mode and try out your connection again.
Let me know how it turns out

Ok will do, just asked IE why there was a network problem and this was the error message
Cannot communicate with the server 80.189.94.2 Network Diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not receive a responseIf youcan lie down at night knowing in your heart that you just made someone’s day just a little bit better, you know you had a good day!!0 -
So you got no response from the server, definately sounds like a firewall issue, you can send out information, but something is stopping you from recieveing.
I took the liberty of pinging the server at the IP address you gave, got a response around average. (good thing)
Run the scan, and try your connection. If it fails again id suggest you disable any firewall, even windows firewall temporarly just to test it out.

Can't run Anti malware in safe mode as it shows error code 707 (3) whatever that means
so I am running it under normal windows mode..... Fingers crossed Eh!!So you got no response from the server, definately sounds like a firewall issue, you can send out information, but something is stopping you from recieveing.

Good luck hope it all turns out OK

That error code is for Malwarebytes' anti malware program, its a known bug apparently, the 'cure' is to re-install it. But you can run it directly from the programs folder (Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware). Also, delete the shortcut from your desktop and then remake it. That apparently works also.
