The OP has not made it clear if he wants to stop paying line rental to BT, or to get rid of the landline completely.

You dont need to have a BT Proper Landline but you will need a BT Compatible Landline unless you opt for Virgin Media Cable Broadband or Mobile Broadband.

If you dont want to use BT dont cancel the BT Line, just transfer it to your preferred supplier, but note its not always a good idea to move your line rental from BT.

What we mean is that all ADSL services work over the BT network. You may not necessarily pay your line rental to BT, but BT own the local network. This is what we mean by a BT Compatible line. What the other poster means by a Proper BT line is one that you pay line rental direct to BT on. For the purpose of getting ADSL broadband it's the same thing.
If you don't want or don't have, one or other of these then you have to use Virgin Media cable service or mobile broadband.
According to the samknows link, your area has partial Virgin coverage, go to the Virgin Media website and do a postcode check on your address. Remember it's Virgin Cable service you want, not Virgin National service (the latter being supplied over the stanndard BT line).
samknows also shows that there are 6 operators (see the LLU Operator Presence column) which are LLU enabled at your exchange, these are the ones that have their own kit in the exchange and so are likely to offer you a better deal than your current one. However these all require you to have a standard BT line as outlined above.

LLU = Local Loop Unbundled. Kit = hardware.
We can't tell you exactly who will do the best deal for you. But the 6 LLU operators will generally be cheaper, because they are using their own equipment rather than just reselling the BT service. So I suggest you start by going to their websites and checking what deal you can get for your area.
You're not making it easy for us to advise you because you won't explain why/if you want to get rid of your BT line as stated in your original post. If you do, you can't use any of these services.

Yes, Skype will give some free or nearly free calls, but how are you going to connect to Skype without a BT landline though? Skype is a VOIP service, it is not a broadband service.
Virgin is an option only if you are in a cabled area.
