Without a BT line your only options are to use Virgin Media cable broadband (if you are in a cabled area) or use mobile broadband via a dongle. You can move your line rental to wherever you wish but you still need a physical BT line to get an ADSL service.

You get a mobile internet "modem" from a mobile phone provider, usually on a long contract, but 3 offer one on pay as you go. You then plug this into your computer using the USB connection, and it connects to the internet. It usually has a low download limit, though, and speed is highly dependant on signal strength and number of people using the mast.
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.

It's a USB stick with a SIM card in it. So think of it as connecting to the internet via a mobile phone connection. Like a mobile, available on monthly contract or PAYG basis.
Upside: portable, no landline needed. Good for light users-email/web surfing.
Downside, slower than ADSL connection (especially if you're not in a 3G area), can be expensive if you are a heavy user and go over your monthly limit.
Can only be used on one computer at a time-no use if you have multiple PC's to hook up.

  • Hello, this is my first post but I have visited the site for a while now. Wouldn't it be possible to get the line 'unbundled' from BT (LLU). samknows.com has an option to check what options are available to you specific to your postcode.

Welcome to the boards. Yes, there well may be LLU options available at the OP's exchange, but it will still be a BT line on the local loop and he/she will still have to pay line rental, if not to BT then to someone else. The way I read it, he/she was asking if they can get online without using a BT line, i.e. using a non-ADSL service? Perhaps the OP can clarify for us?

So by the sound of it, the saving on line rental would be wiped out by the extra for mobile access. Mobile bb best suited for light users and those who need access on the go. Not quite clear why you are so keen to get rid of landline if the alternative will cost you more?
Have you looked at cable bb option?
Have you looked at samknows.com to see what LLU operators are on your exchange and if you can get a better deal than with Pipex?

You dont need to have a BT Proper Landline but you will need a BT Compatible Landline unless you opt for Virgin Media Cable Broadband or Mobile Broadband.

If you dont want to use BT dont cancel the BT Line, just transfer it to your preferred supplier, but note its not always a good idea to move your line rental from BT.
