Running out of money

Options
I'm a first year student, and my loan only just covers my accommodation costs. I've got a student account with HSBC and I only have about £100 left of my £750 overdraft until my next loan payment comes in, which is at the end of April and will only add about another £100 to my overdraft after I've paid for my accommodation. I've had no luck getting a job and am beginning to worry. My parents can't help me out and I'm scared I'm going to have to leave uni and move home soon. I don't know what to do, any help at all?!

Don't you receive a maintenance grant? Exactly what steps have you taken to find work? Have you tried the university's hardship fund?

I meant to say 'grant' not 'loan'. Note to self: do not try to be sensible when posting after midnight.

Go to careers in uni, get a job.

You say you can't find one but at my careers office they have a advert board full of jobs avail.

Talk to one of the university's Money Advisers to make sure you're getting everything you're entitled to.

Max. Student Loan outside London is £4625, which is £120 a week over 38 weeks. If you get less than this it's because of your parents' income so they should be helping.

Though no-one can go back and make a brand-new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand-new ending.

  • Firefox you did say GRANT not loan so actually it was nofuture who misread!!!! Just thought I would support you on that one as I too have committed the terrible offence in the past of trying to help after a few beers and it has goen horribly wrong!!!
  • How weird.....I though I was going mad then........the words in the quote by nofuture have altered but if this was a 'cut and paste' quote from firefox'x original post how did that happen?!

Thought i had been reading too many mental health books today!!!

I am very offended by your insinuation that I was drunk in charge of my laptop on Friday night.

Mostly because, as I was still suffering from getting totally hammered on Wednesday night, I could not contemplate touching another drop quite so soon. :p

  • Try the job centre website as well as your uni, they usually have a lot more listed, even if they're not 'approved'. Also, speak to an adviser at your uni about the Access to Learning Fund (ALF), you sound like you're eligible for it. Check out the 'Up your income' board as well, they have lots of good tips for making extra cash. It might help if you worked out a Statement of Affairs as well and posted it up here so people can advise you on things to cut back on. I understand if you can't do the Statement of Affairs though, I'm a student too and I can't work it out either. Here's the link anyway: http://www.makesenseofcards.com/soacalc.html Hope this helps.
