DhSS, special payments.

Hi All,

first off, thanks for the great board..It's been of help for me many times.but this is my first post.

It's a small question aimed at anyone who knows.

I've been on IS benefit since August 08, previous to that JSA for two years despite trying hard to get work..anyway, had an accident and now I going through the mill for IS recipients who are there because they had'nt paid enough NI stamps to get IB.

I have very little money left after paying bills, ect and disposable cash for things like clothes and haircuts is slim to none. I buy clothes from charity shops, not a problem, I believe in recycling...but after being on benefits for so long my shoes (I have one pair of shoes and one pair of boots) are worn out, at least the souls are, in both pairs..I can never find mens shoes in charity shops..

So, is there any social security benefit available to furnish me with shoes? a special one off payment (I don't wish to take out a loan as I'll never be able to pay it back).
I'd appreicate any helpull responce, as my feet are tired of being wet and cold.

Thanks again

roger.

I dont think there is any sort of one off payment to pay for clothing etc, you are expected to buy that sort of item out of your is, there are loans available for emergency items, but even then the amount of any loan will still be deducted from any benefit you recieve each week.
It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not.

If you post a SOA (list of income and outgoings) people will be able to help you.

    Thanks Bozo.

Did you mean post it in this thread or some special place.

    I get 120 pounds a fortnight.
Out of the 240 per month I pay set payments for utilitys.
53 pounds a month duel full, gas electricity
25 pounds per month for for fone and broadband and TV,(my computer is my lifeline, I pay all my bills and keep in touch with family plus arrange medical appointments online).

31 pounds a month water rates.
total outgoings = 109 pounds per month.

leaving 131 pounds per month for everything else.:o

my rent and rates are paid for.

What is everything else? Spend £29.99 or £39.99 on a pair of shoes on sale. Live on 100 pounds or 90 pounds for four weeks. If you live on £131 you can live on £100 now and again.

(Pedantic note: if you receive £60.50 per week, then your monthly income is £20 more than stated. (£242 per four weeks is £262.88 per calendar month.) So that means you have £151 spare per month.)

(In fact, since you are probably paid every two weeks, it's even easier to manage the purchase than that since it's only two weeks you have to skimp over, not four.)

I'm surprised you have had no luck in charity shops as all mine locally have just as many mens as ladies shoes. Could you take a bus into a different town centre and investigate their charity shops? I got all my sandals and shoes from my local BHF shop last year-all M&S leather that had hardly been worn They will do me again through most of this year!At the moment there are fantastic bargains to be had in clothes and shoes and you should easily be able to get a decent pair of shoes for even £25. It is hard-I am on benefits and had to get my oldest boy trainers and footie boots (compulsory for school next week) yesterday. His toes were literally bursting out of the ones he was wearing! It took a whole day of tramping around lakeside with much negotiation with my son over what he would settle for,but I did manage to stick to my budget and went from shop to shop to make sure I got the cheapest deal.
Is there any chance of an insurance/compensation payout for your accident? Have you tried local charities that may help towards the cost of shoes? Our Church has a hardship fund which pays out to local people after they have submitted a request and statement of circumstances (they don't have to be members.)Also join the grocery challenge,if you can cut down your general expenditure you will be able to save for larger purchases like this.Hope you manage to sort your problem out from ideas on this thread.
Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!

Thanks for making me feel better. Unfortunately, no chance of insurence pay outs,(it was my fault  ).

I have to go to a larger town on the 10th march for a IS medical, maybe I can pick up some shoes there.

    Kimyeovil,

Thanks for the maths lesson, I was never very hot on maths or the calender, when I get my next check I must remember how rich I am and rush out to buy some gucci wear.:D

if you have a medical problem and you have put on or lost weight because of it you may be able to claim a community care grant for help you do not need to pay this back a freind of mine claimed £350 succesfully.

I am at a loss too, Community Care Grants are to help people back into the community and keep families together.
