Jaytar, did you buy your tickets to Empire state before you went? I've read that the queues are horrendous! Did you go to the Top Of The Rock as well?
Must admit we bypassed the queue as we had a wheelchair with us, but the main queue wasn't that bad. Didn't do Top of the Rock, will do that next time.
Another great view is from the Staten Island Ferry which is free. The worst queue we came across was to get to the top of the Statue Of Liberty so we didn't bother. Standing at the bottom and looking up at it is awesome enough!0 -
I used to live in NYC so I can (hopefully) offer some cool tips:
The Beauty Bar - very cool place on 14th street, you sit in a 50's style salon and they bring you cocktails whilst you get a manicure! But at night it turns into a rocking bar:

Then Cilantro, excellent restaurant up on the east side (1st and 70th street I think). Mexican influenced although NOT tex-mex, much more subtle and flavorsome than that:

And then, the Vinegar Factory. You have to go here for Brunch. It's legendary. I went there even before it got all popular but I think it featured in SATC or something. 91st street

Top of the rock cost 20 quid, but they have a really cool glass roofed lift, and the lift shaft is all lit up, still not worth 20 quid though.0

Not only have they stopped people going up the top of the statue but its apparently like a 2/3 hour nightmare to get to it with all the security checks these days.0 -

I know - decent ale bar but I thought I was in a kitsch mood and opted for the Beauty Bar!
Here's the link for McSorley's if you fancy having a peek.......

The current yellow cab fare from JFK to Manhattan is $45. This does not include toll fees.
The Top of the rock was amazing, much shorter queues than the Empire State building, plus you actually get to see the empire state building! The Chrysler building is my favourite though, especially lit up at night.
Marinella's in Greenwich Village is my food recommendation, it was lovely.0
