Transfer from JFK to Manhattan

I'm off to New York (with OH) for Easter - can anyone give me some pointers on the best way to travel into New York from the airport (JFK). We'll be arriving 7.45pm and our flight back is 10pm.
Many thanks....
PS. (added as an afterthought!!) if anyone has any info or do not miss things to do, they would be very much appreciated.

Hi, We went last year and found a desk inside airport that did cheap transfers. i think it was about $25to 30 for a couple. hope this helps
  • IF you make your way outside the airport you can catch a bus straight into Manhatten to Grand Central for about $5.
  • We also caught a bus from the airport to the centre, however the traffic can be a bit of a nightmare so can take quite a long time sometimes. There is a massive cemetry on the way in to the city which is unbelievabley big. I have never seen anything like it.

    Have a look HERE

Was this a minibus - did you have to wait very long?

Use the "airtrain" to Jamaica Station. Then Long Island trains to Penn Station, or the subway. Or to Howard Beach Station, subway to Manhattan.

Official Yellow Cabs from JFK to anywhere in Manhattan are a fixed price. It tells you the price on the board at the official yellow cab booth outside the airport and is also displayed in all cabs. We also never had any problems getting a cab back to JFK.

The one 'not to be missed' thing to do is to go up the Empire State at night. The view is amazing. Alternatively, go up late in the day and wait till it gets dark. I promise you its unbelievable.

Jaytar, did you buy your tickets to Empire state before you went? I've read that the queues are horrendous! Did you go to the Top Of The Rock as well?
