I've recently moved from Lloyds to A&L and can say that Lloyds online service was excellent whereas I'm quite disappointed with A&L.

Agreed, I have current accounts with Lloyds and A&L - the Lloyds service is far better whereas the A&L transfer system is fairly poor.

I'm with HSBC, First Direct and Cahoot and I've not experienced any problems with any of them. I've been with HSBC the longest and since I started online banking I haven't spoken to a soul in HSBC. I'm a new convert to Cahoot and First Direct but I don't think I could go back to a standard bank account. Internet banking is just so much easier for me.
  • Nationwide's I have found to be excellent. You can now easily do overpayments to Mortgage account (if its with Nationwide) from Flex Account.
Very easy to set up payments to credit cards, utilities, any savings accounts.
Overall its a very good integrated site.
On a business level I've got a Abbey Business account & their site is vgood too.
It was easy to set up a payment transfer to my personal Flex Account so I'm now controlling all finances from the desktop.

My opinions on online banking systems I have used:

HSBC: Great, easy to use. Can download statements for MS money. Can change your address online. You can also send secure messages which are usually answered fairly promptly.

Natwest: Don't like the new look, but its still fairly easy to use. Best feature that the others here don't have is that it remembers when you last downloaded statements and you can download statements (ofx for MS money) from more than one account at once (eg bank and credit card). Worst thing is that you can't change your address or send secure messages so you have to phone or go into a branch.

Nationwide: Good; I find the menu system a bit weird. My personal major gripe is that I can't download statements for MS money as I have an old version (99).

smile: It is quite good although not as good as I was expecting. I was disappointed that you can't download statements into money. I think its crazy that there's no method of downloading statements. If you want a record of your transactions you have to print them off as they don't post them to you like the other institutions I comment on here.

Coventry building society: Nice and easy to use - the online savings account works quite like a current account really, in that you can make BACS payments to any account or pay bills. You can change your address online and send secure messages.

There are other reasons to avoid the big high street banks but HSBC in particular does have really good internet banking. To me the internet banking is a really important factor in customer service and it sounds like some of these companies should really be pulling their socks up!
