I have the following current accounts and my comments on their online systems are as follows:
    • HSBC clear interface; all transactions show immediately; payees can be deleted
    • Lloyds TSB payees can be deleted
    • Norwich & Peterborough clear, fast loading interface; payees can be deleted
    • Cahoot clear interface; payees can be deleted; one-off payments do not need to be saved
    • FirstDirect payees cannot be deleted; does not work in Opera browser
    • Bank of Scotland / Halifax occasional server problems resulting in slow response times; a fairly small maximum number of standing orders, direct debits, and payees; payees cannot be deleted with immediate effect
    • Alliance & Leicester transactions do not show immediately, even inter-account transfers; payees cannot be viewed or deleted

I have ordered the above banks by userfriednliness, merely judging them by their web interfaces.

There are, of course other points to consider such as interest rates, or speed of BACS Transfers, and, for short-term gain, joining incentives.

Alliance & Leicester and Lloyds TSB offer referral incentives, both of which you will find help with on the MSE referral board.

I have been with first direct for 15 years now and have always found them brilliant and very helpful. They are very sympathetic when I make a mistake (e.g. letting my account go over it's overdraft limit). Online and by telephone they are great - have my mortgage, savings and credit cards with them. Have also just closed down an account with Egg as I didn't need it anymore and they were good too. Find a friend with a FD account and get them to recommend you and you both get some money to open the account!
  • I've always liked the Barclays site. Have been using it for years and my only gripe is that standing orders between my own accounts take a day to show up.

I've also used Halifax and thats ok.

Worst of the ones I used was Intelligent Finance. Thought it was rubbish.

I used to be with Smile and that was good

I'm now with A+L - bad and Nationwide - good
  • I was with A&L and found their online banking absolutely appalling, as was their customer service. Now with Smile and I can't fault it - easy to use and great customer services. Their response to emails is fast, friendly and personalised which I really like. They have a freepost address to send cheques to and we pay cash in at the local Post Office which clears into the account quickly.

I am currently leaving Halifax because of problems with their online banking.

I was very impressed with Halifax online banking until a recent upgrade they made to their system. It would no longer accept my security details and Halifax told me that a number of other customers were similarly affected.

They also said they had no timescale for fixing the problem so I transferred to Nationwide immediately. I am now trying to persuade Nationwide to give me a debit card and a cheque book!

You can use Nationwide online banking to update Microsoft Money on a daily basis - this is the only bank/building scoiety offering this service. However, there are problems in classifying account transfers.

I've recently moved from Lloyds to A&L and can say that Lloyds online service was excellent whereas I'm quite disappointed with A&L.
  • I'm with Halifax and have had no probs with their online banking (touch wood). Having said that, I help my mum with her online banking with LloydsTSB, and their online service is superb.
