Do you know if your house is served overhead (from a pole outside) or underground ?, if overhead follow the cable from the pole to where it
enters the house...it should terminate on a nte5 type socket within 3-5m of where it enters the house.( if the openreach guy did a new install)..if a u/g feed may be a bit harder to find where the line enters the house but the 'main' socket will be downstairs
If you have a phone book look at the first couple of pages it has diagrams of what a nte5 looks like ( its a tele socket with a horizontal line dividing the box into 2 parts) if you remove the bottom part of the nte is exposes a test point ,this is the line directly back to the exchange ( so the best possible place to plug your router in) but it may not be in the most suitable place for your router /x box etc.....
I wouldnt advise using extn leads as the tend to be usless for broadband
There is loads of stuff on how to make your internal wiring broadband friendly just do a search for 'adsl bell wire problems'
Did the openreach guy ask (your mother) if you wanted your existing sockets connecting ? if so they should be easy to disconnect by
removing the bottom part of the nte5 type socket ( regardless of how may sockets are in the house only 1 should be a nte5)
Extension sockets should be connected to the 'consumer' panel of the nte ( the removable bit) thats why when you split the nte it
removes all the stuff the end user is responsible for from the line, to give a 'clean' line for testing purposes0 -

Dont really understand what it means, apart from my speed during the test was just under 2 megs, could anybody explain why i have dropped from 6.5 megs to 2 megs from this?, TIA DaveTake every day as it comes!!0 -
You've had noise issues which have reduced your profile. Keep that sync rate and profile should return back to 7150 quite quickly - http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/IPprofile.htm

So just for clarity; is this profile thing something that they can set?
For example to see if I can hit the 7mb, they can just set this profile to 7000 and see how it goes?0 -
Your profile is set automatically depending on your connection rate. Maintain a high connection rate and you get a high profile ie. high download speed. Any issues which cause a low connection rate immediately lower your profile until your line regains stability for a period of upto 5 days.
Common causes are poor/faulty filters, faulty sky boxes, faulty wiring etc..
Using the hidden test socket behind the master faceplate eliminates internal wiring as the cause of any faults.

For a start it's "upto" 8 megs and Ofcom say dial-up speeds is all BT have to provide.
You need to stay connected through the master for at least 5days to see if your IP Profile increases. Big increases should take hours, small increases upto 5 days.

Just moved house and unfortunately street doesnt have cable.
Went through a lot of hassle to eventually get everything with Sky, had my TV installed on the 6th and my telephone lin and broadband were to be installed 7-10 working days later.
Well I eventually got a letter from Sky saying my line will be installed on the 28th of March and the broadband activated on the 1st of April(funny ha ha).
Phoned BT they said they could get it done yesterday so cancelled all the Sky stuff and went with BT.
Bt installed the line yesterday and sent me out a BT Vision box(which is actually quite good) and the wireless router.
Set everything up and went online - browsing is fine quick enough but the download speeds are horrific!!
I did a few speed tests and every test Ive done is reporting between 1.5 and 2 mbit.
Now I know they quote "up to 8mbit" and its reasonably expectable to have !!!! speeds during peak hours, but downloading from various placed - where I maxed out my virgin 20mbit connection - is still only hitting 175k if im lucky!
I have ran tests and downloaded between 8 and 12 last night. Thought ok peak times, Ill try in the morning.
This morning when I got up to feed the dog at 6, I tried again, same!
Again when I tried at half 8 before leaving work.
This is just complete and utter garbage - especially for the price.
Does anyone know how easy it is to get out of a contract with BT. The service has only been on for one day and surely theres a cooling off period?
Ive been reading about Be broadband and o2 offering a more advanced ADSL2+ service on my exchange that I would really rather go with now as this service is just pathetic.
out of interest jonmonty, which homehub are you using, i am asking because i have just read on another forum, that there is a known problem with the new home hub(black one) and bt vision, apparantly bt know about the problem, but dont seem to be doing much about it at the moment:rolleyes:, DaveTake every day as it comes!!0
