No 1p coins for change?

Yes, my husband does this. He'll quite happily hold up a whole shop full of people while he hunts through his coin purse and his pockets for the pence, or better yet the exact money, and if I'm with him he'll turn to me and have me go through my purse. It's like a point of honour with him. He makes it look as if he doesn't trust anyone to give him the right change, although of course he says he's only trying to be helpful. ;DDoes anyone else give the shop assistant the "pence" as well as a larger note to get less small change? I thought this was standard practice, but just lately, shop assistants seem to think I've come from another planet.
For example, if something is £4.64, I gave them a five pound note and 14p in change, expecting a 50p piece in change. All they need to do is enter £5.14 on the till and it will tell them what change to give, but they just can't "get it" and a few times they've tried to give me the small change back saying that I've given them too much!
Result? He never has change handy for the car park ...Signature removed for peace of mind0
