The first time was when I was due #.#6p in change, but I was only given #.#5p. When I challanged this the chimp said that they had run out and that it was only 1p. It had obviously never occured to him to give me 3 x  2p coins!

Also, anyone with a basic understanding of maths (or language for that matter) would be able to calculate a different combination of coins to produce the same amount.

The above cases involved multi-national companies so it makes me wonder what ideals, morals and skills they require in their staff!
If I had a penny (culled from the non-change you've had) for every time I've been asked, in one of our best known supermarkets, how many yoghourts I've got, I'd be rich.

    2 layers, 6 boxes per layer - not that hard ... ;D
Signature removed for peace of mind
  • One of the reasons for marking prices at ......99p, or in the days of proper money, 19/11 (that's nineteen shillings and eleven pence to you youngsters) was to make the shop assitant open the till for the change and not put the notes in their pocket, and obviously it made the item appear cheaper.

At last - the answer to one of life's great mysteries!

  • In Cardiff you don't get change either. If you live there and don't often catch buses you haven't a clue how much change you should have. Also visitors to the capital of Wales must find it a joke. You can get a note off the driver for the overpayment that you might make, and get it back , - but it will probably cost you more than the change to get into town to pick it up!   :-/

I'm in Cardiff as well & I totally agree. Cardiff Bus must be making a fortune from the numbers of people who have to put in more money than the fare because they have no change.
But I bet if you got on and said "oh, I'm sorry, the fare is £1.05 but I've only got £1 so do you mind letting me off the 5p" it would be "on yer bike"... literally >:(

I can't believe it... it happened again last night!!!

It was at the local pizzeria... cost £11.99, gave the guy £22.00 and he gave me only a £10 note back. There was a few seconds pause until I asked for the penny and then he looked at me as if I had asked for one of his kidneys!

He did hand it over though!

A millionairess once explained to me shops & other sellers deliberately round-down to just under the nearest £ not only to make something seem to cost less (£9–something instead of £10) but also to force staff to issue a receipt. Apparently this avoids till workers taking a £20–note & issuing change for only £10 whilst pocketing the stolen £10! Not all of us check our change until we get home. (I do, now that I've become a MoneySavingLearner! ;-) )

Shoppers when told "my till has run out of 1p coins" could offer to swap one of its 5p's for 4p worth of 1's & 2's. That way not only does that customer get his or her fair change, so may other shoppers until such time as the shop management get their act together! I keep my wallet well stocked with change by re-using carrier-bags at Sainsbury's (1p each, cos new ones cost supermarkets about 9p each). :-)

ryan, sympathies for a bus driver making you walk 4 miles – after queuing for the bus, no doubt :-(

i dont mind when they tell me theyve run out of 1ps
i tell them they are about to breach contract by charging you more than they had agreed to take for the article in question

Strange as it may seem, the legal position is that as they have accepted your offer to buy the goods, it is your responsibility to tender the correct money. If you don't, they don't actually have to give you any change.

Obviously most shops do, otherwise none of their customers would ever come back, but it doesn't mean they have to.

Does anyone else give the shop assistant the "pence" as well as a larger note to get less small change? I thought this was standard practice, but just lately, shop assistants seem to think I've come from another planet.

For example, if something is £4.64, I gave them a five pound note and 14p in change, expecting a 50p piece in change. All they need to do is enter £5.14 on the till and it will tell them what change to give, but they just can't "get it" and a few times they've tried to give me the small change back saying that I've given them too much!
