Should John Lewis planning permission be approved

  • My only gripe is the traffic situation. it's already a nightmare at the minute around sprucefield, the m2 at peak times. I hope that its given some consideration. it is not easy or good. traffic jams are awful. i know i'm there twice a day!

Completely Agree.. but thats down to the planners imposing conditions on the project.. ie you can build the complex but you need to upgrade the adjacent road infrastrucure & access routes to cope with increases in Traffic... I don't think that would be too much to ask?? And I believe this would be pretty standard expectation in GB

I know at an old place I worked in England when they built new facilities they had to widen the road adjacent to the new entry, provide a new bus shelter at the road, plant trees around the new building, the list went on!!

    I'm all for it too.
Is there anyone out there against it - apart from Sammy Ego.

I would love to see a big John Lewis at Sprucefield - it'd be fabulous. For me coming from Newry it'd be so convenient - I don't shop in Newry, not enough parking spaces at the minute:rolleyes:

If they do go ahead at Sprucefield then I hope that one of the considerations is that they [STRIKE]improve [/STRIKE] create safe pedestrian access around the whole complex. At the minute it is utter folly and madness that you have to drive between the site that includes Argos and the other site with M&S, or else cross those busy roads by foot.

The Lord Mayor of Lisburn was on the haunted fishtank last night saying how Sprucefield is a regional shopping centre, ie it is not simply aimed at locals. It is true that southerners come to Sprucefield (think they are the ones would couldn't get parked in Newry either:rolleyes:). The A1 and M1 are resources which are already there and I agree that they should be exploited as much as possible.

There is enough land there which has no purpose at all, so that is another resource which is going to waste.

A John Lewis + 19 other stores + 7 restaurants can only be a good thing.

I'm all for it too. Remember when we nearly lost Ikea in a similar situation?
This one's worse though. There's wasteland sitting there waiting to be built on. What really gets me is Lisburn traders whinging about the wee city centre getting run down and everyone being 'pulled out' by Sprucefield. At the same time, they have introduced parking charges in Lisburn, which surely 'pushes out' their potential customers. I'm not keen on paying to park in Belfast, but Lisburn? Come on! Sprucefield here I come. Oh and BTW Lisburn Tesco have plans for expansion too, that place is always queued out with cars.

I would welcome the proposed development.

Anything that gives consumers more choice and free parking is a good thing.

    Cheers, Des.

I'm all for it, I think Belfast got it's turn with the Victoria Square white elephant and Lisburn is much easier to get to.

  • Pity they didn't build the National Stadium there as well with all that easy access;)
