Help with vet fees for my cat?

As I said, PDSA and RSPCA cannot help us as we are not on benefits. It's the only way they will give assistance. I am on a low income but not receiving any extra money so therefor we can't get financial assistance from them. Very frustrating!
I am following up the advice from Lowis and I'm waiting for a call back from the manager of the Cattery, so we'll see what happens there.
Thanks again!0 -

Also, the place where you got him are responsible as they rehomed him with existing conditions......his teeth didnt get bad in a week....so maybe ask them again.
Lastly, how about getting a second opinion? Perhaps the cattery DID have him checked out and got a clean bill of health...so therefore, why is the vet saying he needs teeth out? You need to get it checked out.0 -
I don't get help with housing costs or council tax, and as I live with my partner our combined income is considered, and is just over the amount to be considered for assistance.
I have spoken to PDSA and RSPCA, both of which said they can't help me.
His teeth are bad. He has bad breath, one of his front teeth is chipped and I can see at least one back tooth that is very dark brown and looks like it is decaying. Can't look any closer as he doesn't like it!
I heard back from the cattery and they are looking into how they can help me. Not holding my breath though!0 -
perhaps if you told the cattery that you may have to return him as you can't afford the treatment, they might find some funds to help you.
a cat's tooth doesn't go black in the space of a week or so. did the chip happen since you adopted him though? or does it look old?
the cattery really should help you out.0 -
The chip is old, but still swollen around the gum.
I just heard back from the Cattery, and the owner is going to speak with his vets to see if they can do a reduced rate. Failing that, he will speak to Social Services, who brought Derek into the Cattery, to see if they can help meet the costs. Fingers crossed!
I also got an email tonight from Tailwaggers Club and they can offer £50 which is great!0 -
I don't want to sound harsh but why did you take on a pet when you knew you couldn't afford one? You also have the spaying/neuturing costs and Vaccination costs each year. So many people take on a pet without going through their financies first. You also have flea treatment to buy on a regular basis. Have you thought all these out?
Also I agree with others that the rescue centre should have only rehomed the cat when it was it perfect health. They should have sorted his/her teeeth out first.0 -
There's nothing to suggest the OP can't afford the general upkeep of their new cat, boosters work out to £2.50 per month and Frontline/Drontal £3.15 a month (12 Frontline per year/4 Drontal per year). I'm sure he/she is capable of saving less than £6 a month towards these but not a completely unexpected £250 vets bill less than 2 weeks after adopting the cat. They've also taken out insurance which is one of the most responsible things a pet owner can do in my opinion.0

I know that but with any pet you should be prepared for any unsuspecting vet fees but yes I see your point and at least they have insured the cat.
Op, can you not ask the rescue if they can help considering his/her teeth were in a bad way when you rehomed him/her? Even if they offered to pay half. I know the rescue that I foster for does this.0 -

Thanks for that. We have budgeted for all flea/worming treatments etc, we knew the financial responsibilities when we took him on, but it was so unexpected that we'd have to pay out a load of cash after only having him a week or so!
We have now had a chat with the owner of the Cattery and he is going to speak with the vets to try and get a reduced rate, and if that doesn't work he will speak to Social Services who brought Derek in. So hopefully we'll get somewhere with that.0 -
