  • Really grips my tihs, when people on here moan about what we as tradesman charge. Most of the trades on here try to give people a realistic and honest price of what there asking, then they moan and whinge coz they thinks it too much, you always get um and always will.

Say to them "next time you are in ................ and the bill for the weekly shop comes to £ 82.67 try asking ................... if they will take £ 60.00" That puts in perspective for most - normally.

Once I went to price a job, and the client asked me when I was available, I said not for a couple of months, she then asked how much it would be, so I said I cant give you a proper price as yet as I need to work it out,she sort of asked for a rough guide, so I said it will be no more than X, and no less than X.

She then asked me how long would it take, and I said approx X amount days, so then she said she had someone else come round, said he could do it it 2 days, and was charging her less than what I said.

No way could this job be done in 2 days, even if you worked to 8PM at night, so I said to her, 'I tell you what, if he can do this job in 2 days, to the standard you expect, then I will pay his price'.

She then backtracked, mumbled how she must have got her figures wrong, and said she definately wanted me to do it.

I never did the job, I didnt want the job, as I didnt like the mind games she was playing, but whether she heard wrong or not, she was trying to get me to give her a low price, by saying the other dec was charging X and could do the job in 2 days.
She was prepared to pay peanuts, and I know what the job would have looked liked, as there is no way it could have been done in 2 days.

I agree, but had been there ages, was a good 45 mins from where I live, spent a good hour there, and I dont charge for quotes , but I was trying to explain to her that it couldnt be done, she wanted to know how much it would be if she did this or that.
But all she was interested in was how much less I could do it for, and was playing one agaisnt the other.

Admittidly she was wasting my time, and I lost about 3 hours, of which I didnt charge, and I wouldnt anyway, but fortunately this type of client is very few and far between, I am very lucky really, as I have worked for some very genuine and lovely people, but its not all plain sailing being self employed, we do lose out a lot in many ways.

If it had been a real b...h of a job and taken you 90 minutes but only charged them £65 'cos you could see other work from them inthe near future would they offer to make up the difference? Nah!

Too many people gripe about cowboy tradesmen but it never occurs to them that there are more than a few customers out there who keep a horse in their yard. :j
