ASDA sneaky selling techniques...

  • When we asked him if we could grab some carrier bags from the next checkout, he said there weren't any in the entire supermarket and we'd have to buy hemp bags or have nothing.
If the poo faced spotty moldoon had said that to me, he would be running up the aisle to put my things back on the shelf pretty sharpish.

At the point of sale it is an offer, not a conclusion of the sale.

Sorry, thought they were called hemp bags, i heard someone call them that once. At least you realised what I was on about! Thanks for the advice, will definitely carry a couple of carriers with me wherever I go in the future. However, my main gripe was the fact that the man who served us told us that there were absolutely no other bags in the entire store...basically he lied to us in order to get us to buy more expensive bags rather than use free ones. If it is a whole store policy then it is still annoying, but easier to accept. I just feel that we were tricked into buying them!

you should have gone back to the till and demanded your money back and pointed out to him that he was incorrect in stating that their were no carry bags and get your money bag

if he stated to goto customer services you should have said no and stated he made the mistake you can rectify it now and hold the rest of the shoppers up until he sorted it out

Our local Asda ran out of bags last week and were giving away bag-for-life free instead.
(I just posted a whinge on the warnings board about Asda mis-selling their credid card, so I can't believe I'm defending them on this board!!)

I usually carry a couple of emergency carrier bags in my handbag in case checkout staff try it on. I have been doing this ever since Woolworths (before their demise) began charging for bags. Or if you know you're going to the supermarket, then make sure you carry a "hessayon" (hemp, what's that all about?) bag with you.

What on earth is 'hessayon'

    Do you mean, hessian?

Do we really all need to do a spellcheck before making any postings ?
This is only a social forum, the important point is, we can understand what was meant.

As we all knew what the original poster meant when he/she said 'Hemp'.

Our local store ran out of free carrier bags and the till operators were insisting there were none in the store, so the same thing happened to us. Also, on the way out we saw them being unloaded at other tills, just like what happened with you. However, they literally had just arrived in store after coming from a nearby store (as someone explained above) and the till operators were truly not aware they had arrived yet and being unloaded at other checkouts at that point.

So maybe he was telling the truth, he honestly didn't know there were more bags just come in?
  • I don't think that was possible...when we went out we checked the tills on either side and they both had loads of bags. Surely if our checkout boy ran out then the first thing he would've done was to ask the operators on either side? He was literally the only checkout without any bags which is why this has annoyed me so much!

I abandoned a whole trolley load of food at the checkout in Asda on Monday night much to the annoyance of some jumped up CSA, they had also 'run out of bags' if they cant provide a means for me to get my shopping home I wont be shopping there.

Exactly, where do the cardboard boxes go now? According to the adverts sold for recycling. Why not pile them up and let customers use them.

Ah because it would reduce income.

We can't give out carrier bags, but we can give you increasingly large amounts of plastic wrapping.
