Apologies if I've missed something but I really don't think ESA is appropriate here.
No, I don't think you have missed anything; those are my thoughts too.
The finger, asthma (unless it is way more of an issue than I think) and the underactive thyroid would not make him unable to work anyway.
Plus he is not saying he cannot work but rather he wants compensating for the time he will be unpaid and is looking to disablility benefits for this. I'm not convinced that is appropriate either.
OP - I would say you are more fortunate than some of his collegaues because you do at least have other income to tide you over and can claim housing costs.
On a different note though:
I would take issue with the fact he cannot use his stick at work, in any case, as I'd have thought the employer needs to accomodate disability needs like that. Why do they say it is a health and safety issue? Have they actually stated that he cannot use his stick and said why they cannot make the necessary changes? I know he doesn't need it now, but what if he does in the future?0 -

Well, as long as I haven't missed something then I think ESA is definitely not appropriate. How can you apply for a benefit that's for people who are unable to work if you've been working up until the day before your claim and you'll be going back to work in 2 weeks' time? It strikes me as a complete waste of everybody's time and effort.0

Regardless of what "most people" said, you were obviously capable of working and would therefore not have been eligible to claim IB!0 -

But the person in question is going back to work after 2 weeks; that's the difference!0 -
I'm puzzled by this bit:
"Now hubby has mobility probs due to his knee problem and which he uses a stick to help him get around, but at work he dont use the stick due to heatlth and safety""You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0 -
