Very low upload speed any ideas?

Hi,
I have sent an email to aol techie help, but it might take a while:rolleyes: and I'm not sure how much help they will be... So I hope I can get some help from the lovely people here.

My DS2 has been struggling to play any game on Xbox live. He is lagging really badly (it's unplayable) and was moaning muchly so I switched on my pc and did a speedtest at speedtest.net - result is that my upload speed is 52 kb/s and ping is 131 ms. These numbers are consistant with tests done on other sites and on my DS1 pc so it seems to be the line rather than the xbox/ xbox live server.
Any ideas, is it the router? One reason I dont hold out much help from aol is when I phoned them last week about something else they told me that they did not support my router and never have and that was the end of the conversation:mad: even though the router was unrelated to my software problem. (well, I bought the router from them! and it works fine etc so I am unsure it is a problem but I hate talking in pidgin English so gave up)

Any ideas on how to get my upload speed higher? Thanks guys:D

  • was the speedtest run with no other devices using the connection? if ds1 (dear son?) was using his PC at the time...maybe downloading something...the associated upload would affect other users.
the ping of 131 is dire, but would also be affected by the same thing (basically, the ping is the response from the server, the journey time from your PC, to it, and back) speedtest.net is notoriously bad for pings, try a command prompt (win key+r CMD) type ping https://www.jolt.co.uk and see if that's as bad (I bet it's much better).
then we get onto things like the router stats, checking the filter...internal wiring...bell wire...extensions etc..., but do the 1st couple of things before all that

  • Thanks for replying, I will look at jolt now. We disconnected the other pcs/xbox while the test were being done.

  • ok ping looking better this way - best 58ms, worst 60ms average 59ms. (and I think son is still online on pc so could be even better ?)
    Thanks
I suppose I need to consider other more, techie things now?

  • OS board? I can only guess Other [ Sh swear filter would jump in here] :)

What kind of router do you have? tell us your stats.
Is the router connected directly (via a filter) to the telephone master socket?

  • Hi DatabaseError,
My router (speedtouch 510) is plugged in directly to master socket via filter.

  • If I'm reading that right...the telephone exchange is next door but 1 (or very close :) )

with the 11Db attenuation you should be getting full sync (~8m)...but you're not (~4.8m)
the poor upload sync is due to cpw being...erm...what's the word I'm looking for?

Once sorted, you need to get onto cpw/tt/aol/pos whatever and insist on interleaving being taken off your line, you shouldn't need it so close to the exchange, and removing it will improve the ping...and so gaming

11.5Db Snr shows that the systems are trying to cope with whatever problems your line has.

undo the 2 screws on the BT master faceplate, plug the router into the exposed test socket and get the new stats...hopefully much better ones.

just a thought for when you do get a decent upload speed:

do you have the correct ports forwarded for xbox live (or UPnP enabled) in the routers admin pages?

    .

i read the stats as they were getting 7616 down, and 448 up

  • Ok telephone exchange is actually about 300m away direct with lots of houses in between, not next door - is this relevant??

This doesn't make much sense to me, but I am interested in the interleaving thing. Don't know how to approach the indian call centre with that one Hmm.

    Thanks

does this mean that I should be able to get a good bandwidth, but that something (router?) inthe house is stopping me?

    Thanks
