If you add in personal debt then we're in the worst position.

Maybe - but our Companies are not as indebted as, say, European companies which are much more highly leveraged.

Yeah I agree. But I'm not really interested in a competition to be the worst.

Showing that the UK is actually doing better than other major economies in terms of percentage falls in GDP and percentages rises in unemployment indicates that our economy is more resilient than some posters suggest. I don't know why you would be disinterested in this fact - unless of course you have an agenda.

    >And I like you Mr Cluesent, so it'd be nice to debate the evidence<

LOL. Who replied to a posting with a dismissive - 'I love this kind of wacky stuff.' Crikey, it was Cleaver! Knock me down with a feather, etc. etc,

Right now I feel the BBC is dumbing stuff down so much (as it did during the boom) and not providing balanced opinions of the crisis or covering key critical topics with the scrutiny they require.

If people were more educated in the first place they could have prevented this. If the government is making more bad decisions, just like they did for the past decade, then an educated population could put a stop to it, or at least prepare themselves.

I still believe strongly that people should be more educated about this and the media has a strong responsibility to ensure this happens.

You don't have to watch he BBC. There are plenty of other channels geared to a more knowledgable audience - try Bloomberg or CNBC.

EDIT However, I don't think you'll find them reporting that the UK is going bankrupt either. Sorry to disappoint.

First off I disagree. Second, there actually doing the economy a favor by not reporting more doom and gloom, because when they do it has a negative effect on the markets, and thus the economy. And last but not least where is there any evidence that the UK is going bankrupt?

Its not the BBC's job to decide what news to release based on the markets or peoples reaction its function is to report the news regardless. For example yester EVERY single major news channel ran with the story of the whistler blower who claimed he has documents that links brown with this disaster. But pop over to the BBC NOTHING not even a mention. Before you start saying they are waiting for the facts rubbish that is not for them to decide.

Thank you for giving us a link to some real information.
Please read your own link and understand it:
What is says is "The deficit is level pegging, Every man, woman, child and pensioner in this country is living beyond their means to the tune of 400 GBP per month; so racking up an ever increasing debt with the rest of the world."
(Don't tell the Chinese, they might get a bit sick of subsidising us)
I just might be able to stump up my share of that extra 400 GBP per month if I pack up this retirement lark and go back to work full time.
What are you going to do to pay your share?

    Harry.

I pay plenty of tax. What's more, I will happily pay extra tax now and in the future if it prevents people being put on the dole.

And the BBC has reported on all of that, as far as I remember anyway.

If and when we become bankrupt I'm sure they'll report on that too. Britain has had no trouble auctioning off its debt, conveniently not mentioned in the posted article. Shock horror... the article is biased too!

Neither has the US but Germany has and that is a big manufacturing economy with people who save alot. Trouble is it manufactures lots of things nobody wants at the moment - like luxury cars, it's companies are highly leveraged and it's citizens are prone to putting their money under the mattress rather than investing or (heaven forbid) spending!

Why is everyone so concerned with who's worst. So what if some are worse - if our economy is bad and mistakes have been made we deserve coverage in mainstream news broadcasts and deserve answers. Not after it happens but before it happens.

I'm sick of the BBC's constant rebuttal that everything is fine and we're going to have a super quick recovery. I want to hear a different opinion, rather than the same opinion covered in-depth every single day.

Because the problem is global - so any analysis must be global. The UK is not coming out of recession until the US has.

I haven't seen any coverage on the BBC that says we are going to have a super quick recovery:confused:

If you want a different opinion - try a different channel. However, I don't think you'll find one that says we are going bankrupt. Do you think that is because the UK is not going bankrupt and is infact any suggestion that it is is just scaremongering?

    I've been Money Tipped!
Thinking about this, I listen to radio more than I watch tv...by a long way. I think BBC radio 4 has had a fair amount of coverage of the situation...in proportion to the broad range of subjects and drama it covers.

ETA: I've just realised I sound like a Grandmother, not someone in their twenties. I do listen to stuff besides Radio 4.

Now you mention it, I was watching 'Match Of The Day' last week and I could have sworn that the face of Arthur Scargill was mowed in to the pitch at Old Trafford. Maybe there's more to this conspiracy than meets the eye..

On a serious note, I honestly don't spot any political leanings at the BBC that are particulary sinister. I agree, they are a bit left-leaning in the way that they seem constantly worried about offending people and you just know they have around 6,300 people working in their equality and diversity department. But I don't really notice any of this when I listen to their news or read their news website.

I think you've hit the nail on the head here, more than any other post I've seen in this thread.

There is no doubt that there is a heck of a lot wrong with the BBC though - a pretty enormously bloated public organisation that could do with some massive streamlining to bring it into the 21st Century.
